IN THE SUMMERTIME It is accepted wisdom in Major League Soccer that the league's 4 p.m. Eastern time slot on ESPN2 on Saturday afternoons is worth exposing players to the heat of summer. But the match between Dallas and Chicago at the Cotton Bowl, a 0-0 tie, was one of several poor displays in the hot sun this season.
Damn, I missed that game on TV. On Saturday at 4:00, I was baking in the 93 degree heat in Foxboro for a 0-0 tie. And the game I saw didn't suck.

Yeah, and I must have been late for that game at the Cotton Bowl, I didn't realize it was a double header.....the game I saw, kicked off at 7:30, was a very entertaining 4-1 thrashing of the Fire. Hmmm.....I can't believe I missed the early game. Idiots.

Interesting article and a good read. I guess Real Salt Lake does make some sense after all.

Honestly, I think Real Salt Lake is a dumb name. If Salt Lake had a Spanish name, like San Diego or San Antonio, then I could buy it. Maybe they should call it "Lago Real de la Sal"?
Now, the affiliation with Real Madrid make sense. I think the league should do this league-wide, perhaps with an entire European league, especially the EPL, because most Americans have at least heard of that.

Follow the link, and among the short articles on p.2 note this:

-- New York Times
I quote this out of confusion: the match I watched ended 4-1 in Dallas' favor,
and the temperature at kickoff was 81 degrees -- perfect if you are a Brasil team, and not far from perfect for USians. There have been heat-ravaged games this season; I don't think this was one of them.

Most?? I think you are overestimating the average American's familiarity with English soccer.

So if Mexican teams show interest in MLS, it's the end of the road (an attitude expressed elsewhere, not above), but if Euro teams -- even better, a whole league -- are in cahoots, the future is bright, and all is well in the world?

Ugh. Revolting. This article highlights everything I do not like about this new era of MLS expansion. I'm firmly in Eric Wynalda's camp on this one. Sure, the money that foreign investors could bring in is nice, but at what cost? The loss of our identity as an American soccer league?
Crap. I'd rather have the Burn, Wiz, and Clash than Real Salt Lake. Truly a horrendous name. Dave Checketts, if you ABSOLUTELY HAVE TO HAVE IT, please at least Anglicize it and make it Royal Salt Lake or the Salt Lake Royals. At least Americans will be able to pronounce it correctly.

So despite widespread and almost total dislike for the name 'Real', they're probably going to go ahead and name them that?
Well, that's one way to endear yourself to the fans. "I know none of you liked that name but I don't care. I do and that's what I'm going to call it." which I guess he has that right since he forked over the dough for the team, but still. It's frought with disaster. They could just translate it and call them Royal Salt Lake but whatever. All the names kinda stink with I think Highlanders being the best followed by Alliance.

In which case it might make more sense -- and sound better -- to really include the link: RM Salt Lake City (Real Madrid-Salt Lake City).
I think RM Salt Lake City sounds as good as FC Dallas or DC United, but that could be damning with faint praise from other points of view.

Well, Wally, it wasn't like any of the names were all that popular in the first place. Perhaps it is the greater of all evils, but there certainly wasn't much of a consensus favorite. At best you had some people saying that Highlanders "wasn't all that bad".

Not that I give a rat's ass about his opinion, but I can already see Jim Rome just salivating at the possibility of Real Salt Lake.

I'm worried that the "Reel in Salt Lake Fishing Club" might try to sue the new MLS team.
