It's a shame, he's a lovely bloke and a living legend. Deserved to retire gracefully.
I think this will prove to be a bad decision by Newcastle, there is no obvious great candidate to replace Bobby. Steve Bruce I think has found his level at Birmingham, has a 5 million compensation level set in his contract and anyway I heard he is not allowed to leave before the end of this season.
Shearer has no experience at a manager which a person really needs when taking over a big pressurised job like Newcastle, and I do not believe he has the personality for it, although he certainly has the ego.

They were in trouble and he turned them around and made them a regular top 4 outfit .Be interesting to see who the replacement is .

This is a sad, bad decision. No-one becomes the wrong manager over four games; if Robson isn't the right manager now then he wasn't at the end of last season either.
Two points from four games is exactly the return Newcastle had last season; after six games without a win, the team hit form and challenged for a Champions League spot until the last week of the season.
The Newcastle board has done this before - the big name replacement they had for Dalgeish was Gullit - and what a great job he did.

They should have either let Bobby go at the end of last season or the end of this season. To sack him right on the transfer deadline, when any new manager is not going to be appointed in time to buy anyone until January...that's just crazy. Especially with their needs in central defence.

I wonder if shearer had anything to do with that?
If he did he should be ashamed of himself.
If Newcastle did this because Shearer wasn't happy they will never win a thing, and probably won't mind it either....as long as Shearers happy.
Shearer definately wasn't happy when he was subbed which i found interesting, but nobody likes to be subbed i guess.

since he and mourinho are very close, i wonder if mourinho would pick him up to help chelsea...that would be nice, considering Robson made Mourinho.

I don't think he'll play much if he takes over, which will in effect, do Kluivert a favour.
Steve Bruce is lined up to take over from SAF (2005 or 6) then perhaps Sir Bob will got to Brum.
Interesting to note, I saw Gerard Houllier as 7/4 fav for the post

why is this a bad decision? the problem with england and its clubs/fans is that they accept failure. You can be bad for years and still coach the same team. You can spend millions for years and not win a thing and your job is safe/the board/fans will support you. Anywhere else someone like Keegan would have not lasted more than a year yet somehow the board at man city has kept him after all the wasted millions. If he were coaching at italy he would get tomatos thrown at him. Robson (yes he is a legend) has spent the money, had years to win something and has not. He gets fired for it and that is somehow is wrong???
some might say that in spain/italy there is too much pressure for managers, they get sacked if they lose a few games or if the team plays badly etc. Some say in england they let managers have too much control and give them to much time for whatever their project is for the team. Other say in england the goal is not to win something but just to stay up. Let arsenal/man u and 2 other teams worry about winning the titles.
can't forget to mention the other problem which is managers with no experience. How can Shearer be the top candidate? Just like Keegan with england/Hoddle. In england they don't even become assistants or spend time working in coaching before taking a manager role. Might as well get wayne rooney to coach everton I bet they would consider it!

Yes ... that's what the game needs. More knee-jerk ********wittery a la Italy and Spain. You know Freddie Shepherd's problem? He's not Jesus Gil. Now THAT'S how you run a football club.
Even given your long and inglorious history of stupid posts, that one ranks as one of the stupidest.

lol ,I hear that Venables is being linked with the position .

It's no LOLing matter. It's part of the essential fabric of our universe. If Terry Venables is not immediately linked with every major managerial vacancy in Britain then untold things could happen to the world as we now it. It's practically a law of nature.

Thanks for making me burst into laughter! Good one, I agree.
I can understand them getting rid of Robson because they want to be more consistent or take that next step up the table.
I can't understand Craig Bellamy ripping him repeatedly and refusing to play if they got Rooney, then saying "he was like a father to me."
I can't understand why Newcastle would get rid of him when they had no clue who to replace him with. I guess things under Sir Bobby were unbearable in the dressing room, or to the board.
I do wonder what Shearer's influence is. I've always liked him as a player and as a team leader, but the coincidence with Gullit's dismissal is striking. I thought it was uncharacteristic for Shearer to speak out about Kluivert's transfer like he did, so maybe he's not as mature as I figured.
P.S. - good point about player coaches not learning how to coach first by being an assistant or getting a coaching badge. I played for over 20 years, but I found I had to learn a lot of new skills when I went into coaching. It's more than just laying out cones, you have to keep players mentally engaged, teach them technique and tactics, and work on their fitness, in a short span of time. That requires well designed training sessions.

shepard is a ********, the newcastle players are **********, between them they managed to screw the club up so much that i dont think any sane manager who wants to keep thier reputations would want to go near it...
