I'm a hip-hop head, but I'm open-minded and a friend who is a huge chili fan recommended I check them out so I just got their album "Blood Sugar Sex Magik", and I'm impressed, anyone else a RHCP fan? and what's you opinion on their music?

IMHO, Blood Sugar Sex Magik is easily their best work, although they have had a few moments of brilliance before and after it. They are talented musicians and songwriters. I'm glad that they got that whole "we're SUPER FUNKY and COOL!" thing out of the way in the late 80's. It was OK at the time but it will not be as long-lasting as actual high quality songs and performances like they produced in the 90's and some more recent.
What kind of hip hop are you into over across the pond? I am a fan of actual "underground" hip hop....today I've got in my iTunes playlist: Souls of Mischeif, Blackalicious, Quannum, Unknown Prophets, Hieroglyphics, and Poor Righteous Teachers.

FWIW, I think they took the train to suckville after that album. Of course, I am older and my favorite RHCP albums are Uplift Mofo Party Plan and Mother's Milk.

i agree with all of this except the assertion that BSSM is easily their best... mother's milk is a pure funk masterpiece

I've always been a bit neutral on the Peppers. Being in LA when they were the sh:t made me a bit sick of them, but they've put on some incredible shows. On vinyl, it's always come off second best.
But I just had to comment on Mad Theory being a hip-hop head and liking the Pepps -- because Anthony Kiedis is to rap what Linda Tripp is to autoerotica.

Mother's Milk is the only RHCP album I've ever owned. It was okay, but I thought the cover of Stevie Wonder's "Higher Ground" would have been better left off. They're kinda the Kenny G of funk.

They're one of those bands I'd be content to own a 'greatest hits' or 'best of' by. You can always count on 'em for a few good singles per album, but I'm not too interested in most of it. However, to echo others' sentiments, their earlier stuff is more fun.
I'll never forget being in middle school and my grandmother came across my copy of Mother's Milk and was puzzled greatly (but amazingly not upset) by the album cover. It's a good thing she didn't see the Abbey Road E.P.. :D

Good thing you started with that album because aside from Mother's Milk its all crap thereafter. Dont bother getting anything else just maybe download the occassional mediocre song they put out in the later years and call it even.

k vale madre LEGEND!!!!!
You stopped listening to them cuz of 'Under the Bridge'???
Surely you jest. Bands evolve. The Beatles went from 'I Want to Hold Your Hand' to 'Sgt. Pepper'. Doesn't mean old fans should jump ship.
Its not like Anthony, Flea and Co. turned into Hootie and the Blowfish.
BSSM was my last tape purchase. I still have that beat up thing somewhere.

They are one of the most overrated bands from the 90s, and 80s and 00s, too, for that matter.
Mother's Milk? Sucked.
BSSM? Sucked?
The old stuff? Sucky suck played by a bunch of sucks who hang out in guitar stores.
Everything else? Sucked.
I bought a couple of their albums back in the day because I was convinced that there had to be a reason everyone liked them. Nope. There was no reason.
Oh, and I saw them once and thought they were boring as hell. Like Faith No More, you knew exactly what to expect before the show started. It was 100% surprise-free.
They should be kicked in the socks for convincing too many young folks that merely playing slap bass equals "funky."

Evolving doesn't always mean good.
They should be banned from ever making a slow song again.
The Beatles went from 'I Want to Hold Your Hand' to 'Sgt. Pepper'. Doesn't mean old fans should jump ship.
Why not? What about the people that hated Beatles stuff once Sgt. Pepper came along? They should like it based on other work? If the band you like starts making crap, then you should still listen to the new stuff just beacuse it's coming from the same band? That's ridiculous.

I'm abit like you I'm not into that commercial mainstream garbage. I'll just tell you my fav albums, most of these artists either suck or are dead now. top 3 are in order the rest are all equal.
1.Illmatic - greatest rap album of alltime, lyrically superior to 99% of most albums, and back when Nas was Nasty.
2. Midnight Marauders - Jazzy hip-hop by A tribe called quest.
3. Enter the 36 chambers - Wu-tang debut album, pure grimey.
4. Ready to Die - Biggie Smalls, before Gay-diddy ruined his image.
5. All eyez on me - tupac has so many alter egos, this is during his thug period.
6. The infamous - Mobb Deep, 2 words - shook ones!
7. Liquid Swords - Wu-tangs lead rapper Gza second masterpiece.
8. Only built 4 cuban linx - Wu-tangs mafioso rapper Raekwon's effort
9. seven day theory - my personal fav tupac album, and his last before his death, during his Makavelli period.
10. Doggystyle - back when snoop ruled, g-funk at it's best.

Give me an example of what you like (as far as rock) and I'll give you a good underground equivalent (or more accurately, who the mainstream rock band ripped off).
As far as your tastes in hip hop, I'm all about the Midnight Marauders, I think it's Quest's best album.. but I absolutely cannot stand anything to do with Tupac or B.I.G. OK, one song that Tupac did was OK but it was with Digital Underground (I Get Around) and ANYONE would sound awesome with D.U.

I've got 'By the Way', 'Californication' and 'BSSM'. Like most bands, they grew up as Joy Division fans.
