They lost their first shoot out. I still remember it vividly even though I was a little kid (because it was heart breaking). Socrates and Platini missed penalties. Then one penalty from France (Tigana's?) hit Carlos Alberto's (Brazil's GK) back, after hitting the post, and went in. Brazil protested but the goal stood. Then Joel Bats (France's GK, the Lance Armstrong of football?) saved Julio Cesar's penalty to ensure that France won the match. However, since then Brazil have not lost.
In that match three of the greatest footballers ever missed penalties (Zico in regulation time). No other match in history can boast of that. Italy (1994, Baresi, Baggio) and Argentina v Yugoslavia (1990, Stoikovic, Maradona) come close.

1993 Copa America quarterfinals vs Argentina. This game ended 3-3 (I think) and there were players of great importance for both teams: Cafu, Roberto Carlos, Simeone and Batistuta.
1995 Copa America final vs Uruguay. Tulio missed his. The match had ended 1-1.
There was also 1986.
Fortunately, as of late, we win more than we lost - especially when it involves a World Cup title.

You are right. I forgot all about the Copa America (we sure do not give it much importance). Heck, that 1995 final, Francescoli's last match, was lost because of Taffarel's brilliance. How did he let in that goal in regulation time? He made no attempt to stop the ball thinking it was going out and it went and nestled itself at the back of the net.
