With all this talk of 'England's talent pool running dry', I was just wondering which English striker you think will carry the flag for England, in terms of goal-scoring, in the premiership this season?

I'm gonna go out on a huge limb and say Wright-Phillips. I don't know why I pick him, I just have a feeling.

Top three will probably be Smith, Defoe, and Shearer. I could see any one of those three, and I'm hoping for Defoe.

Must have spent too long fiddling with the poll... It's there now anyway.

I considered Wright-Phillips a winger, and so ruled him out of the poll.

Well Alan Smith has been quite impressive thus far, and I believe he will take Saha's starting sport. And he already has like 5 goals in 6 games for ManU.

That's a good point, so I guess I'll go with Shearer. Obviously he isn't the same player he used to be, but he continues to amaze me, with his goal-scoring ability.

Last year I did not think he could do it, but he did. Mighty Alan Shearer just defies age and I have to choose him.

The poll offered Carlton Cole but not Darius Vassell of Aston Villa. Assuming we don`t sign Beattie I can see Vassell getting a much better tally this season than his usual 9 or 10. He`s started well, and is unlucky to only have one goal so far. He didn`t score his first EPL goal until December the 28th last year but ended with 9, so if he plays all season 16-20 is realistic.

Darius Vassell

Season Matches Goals

2003/04 -- 32 --- 9
2002/03 -- 33 --- 8
2001/02 -- 36 --- 12

Darius Vassell has remained consistently inconsistent over the past few years. The figures above do not provide good evidence for a net improvement in his goal-scoring over the past few years. A goal every three games (or less), although not terrible, clearly isn't going to win him this competition.

In the end I picked Carlton Cole as Villa's representative instead because he is younger and therefore more likely to show significant improvement over the season, and hence scoring lots of goals. Claudio Ranieri thought very highly of him, and he has all the attributes necessary to become a great striker.

I admit that, outside of five obvious choices, picking eight names was tricky.

He didn't score his first EPL goal until December the 28th last year but ended with 9, so if he plays all season 16-20 is realistic.

Except he played a lot of games for Villa before December the 28th. He just didn't score for ages. Which sort of illustrates my point, consistently inconsistent. Did you assume he was out injured all that time?

indeed. Ranieri's nickname for him? "my young lion" isn't that the cutest thing you've ever heard?:)

alan smith is without a doubt the best england striker right now as long as sir alex isnt a idiot and doesnt start him because of saha and ruud then he will easily score the most

While I agree with the overall results, I do have the feeling Rooney may come out with more goals for Man U than Smith, despite his late start.

Providin they both stay injury-free and are given lots of opportunities by their respective strike partners and midfielders, Defoe or Smith. Saying that, Defoe will play a lot more games for Spurs than Smith, because Jermaine has less competition for a place. Smith has got Saha, Rooney, and RvN on his arse. Defoe has got Kanoute, Keane, um....Silva..er...Slabber...erm..and Barnard.

Also, why is Jermaine Defoe in italics?

Defoe will score a lot, but I'm plumping for Shearer. With a new manager which always gives a team a lift and his experience he will get his fair share. Defoe goals output might suffer a bit when Spurs have a dip as is inevitable in a team being completely overhauled by Santini. I think Newcastle will be a more stable unit.

Woohoo! I'm the first person to vote for "other"...... I don't know why but I think Kevin Phillips has an outside chance of doing this and am surprised he's not even on the list.

Super Kev plays on a side that is depending on it's goalie and is in such disarray defensively on account of Svensson's injury woes. With Beattie the preferred target, Phillips will be luck to tally 7 goals.
