I went to see John Prine last night and was blown away. How one man can stand there with an acoustic guitar and transfix 15,000 is amazing. I saw John Hiatt a few months back and it got me to thinking about starting a Songwriters Hall of Fame thread. I would like to nominate....

1. Stevie Wonder
2. John Hiatt
3. John Prine

In alphabetical order:

Irving Berlin
George & Ira Gershwin
Jerome Kern & many lyricists
Frederick Loewe & Alan Jay Lerner
Cole Porter
Richard Rodgers & Lorenz Hart/Oscar Hammerstein
Stephen Sondheim

These are the Gods.

There's a pretty good "B" list as well, which I may post later.

the big motown duo (cant recall their names at the moment)
Barrett Strong and Norman Whitfield.

Also belonging on this list is the trio Holland-Dozier-Holland - who wrote even more of the great Motown classics than Strong-Whitfield did - and the duo Gamble and Huff, who penned the classic Philly Soul songs of the early 70s.

And, oh yeah, Brian Wilson and Bruce Springsteen too.

Joni Mitchell is in on the first ballot.

Leonard Cohen would probably qualify for both the songwriters and the poets Hall of Fame.

No love for Jeff Tweedy?

good call, though he may need a few more albums before he kicks the bucket at age 129 to guarantee placement.
