Because it wouldn't be fair amongst the International users out there who don't live in the United States, & recognizes Association Football as the real 'football'.

It's an American website.
Also, there's nothing saying that Association Football has any more right to the moniker of just 'football' than American Football, Australian Football, or Rugby Football.

You could make a pretty valid argument that is American football is closer to the original form of football than the Association variety.
yes, but football is an english term for 'soccer' .And oddly enough, "soccer" is an English abbreviation for Association Football. Funny that.

Damnit, stupid internet crashed right before I posted my large, ranting message. I guess I'll give you the condensed version.
I think American Football has as much of a right to the name "football" as any other football out there. I also think alot of people underestimate the history and age of American Football. The earliest recorded season was in 1869. Princeton won the National Championship. Some teams have played in the same stadium since the early 1900's. I think Michigan Stadium was built in 1910's or so. I wouldn't imagine it held over 10-15k. Today, "The Big House" holds 114,000. And they sell out EVERY game. The longest sellout streak is held by the University of Nebraska. 1962-present. 72,000 capacity. Anyways, here are some pics of Michigan and Neb.

Given this is under the "Other Sports" root forum, "Football" is sufficient.

I agree :)
And since other rival pictures were presented, I just had to throw in my 2 cents:

Thanks for that, I was just going on guesses and (bad) past knowledge :)
Well, I guess i should post my stadium. It's not pretty, but it's one of, if not the loudest stadium in the country:

Capacity is 90k and change. Stupid Gatorzone won't update the stats for last year, so I all have is 2002 capacity, and we've expanded since then. According to Athlon Sports the record crowd for a football game in the state of Florida was set last year in the FSU-UF game, 90,407.

Florida fans are loud??
You're kidding right?
"If you want to experience the best place to watch a football game in the SEC, where the only endangered species is the visiting team, go visit the Swamp. You want loud? Florida Field is Jimi Hendrix playing "The Star-Spangled Banner" at Woodstock….You want hot?… Whoever said football is no day at the beach has never been to Gainesville. It's spring break with shoulder pads …You want that sense of blood in the water? You want to know what it's like to swim with the sharks and run with the bulls? Pack the sunscreen and the shades and take a trip down to college football's version of Dante's Inferno. Because you know what they say. If you can't stand the heat, stay out of 'The Swamp.'"
- Kevin Scarbinsky, Birmingham News
"I rank Ben Hill Griffin Stadium at Florida Field as the nation's toughest stadium. 'The Swamp' is deafening."
- Bob Griese, ABC-TV College Football Analyst

shouldn's this board be called 'rugby for softies' ???
I played American Football in High School and played Club Rugby in college...
I was never hit any where near as hard in my Four years of Rugby as I was in High Scool Football.
Until you play a set of downs of Competive American football you have no clue what youre talking about.
Just because there are pads doesnt mean American football is soft... if anything the pads themselves make the game even more dangerous.

You don't have a clue to the history of the game do you? I see a couple of other posters have filled you in on some of it's history and tradition, I just want to add one point. The reason for helmet and pads is safety, you could not an NFL game without them. Why, as it is now players suffer massive injuries all the time, including the risk of being paralyzed. But this nothing compared to the days before helmets and pads were manatory, early in 1900's, not exactly sure when, in one season there were 18 fatalities just so I'm sure you get that right, that means they died. People were much smaller and slower then, imagine if they played without pads now? How many would die in a season now?

Florida fans are loud??
Dude - don't pick that battle.
Beaver Stadium is not exactly known for being loud.
I went to the Citrus Bowl against Florida several years ago - Penn State fans could learn something from Gator fans.
Plus we both share in a mutual hatred of Bobby Bowden.

Several Oklahoma players last year commented that Bryant-Denny was the loudest stadium they'd ever set foot in.

Why is the hockey board titled 'Ice Hockey?' This is an American message board and ice hockey is the default hockey in America.
