View Full Version : Thoughts on FSW commercials

1. Is it a rule that a commercial for a league on FSW has to be put in hyperbolic terms? Apparently this years' A-League competition "is fiercer than ever" and it will be "the most explosive in history". Also, the commercial for the Bundesliga promises a season witht the most intense competition ever or something like that.
2. The commercial for J-Leage and Football Asia (grouped into one promo) starts off with something like (can't remember the exact wording, but similar to this): "In the land of Japanamation"--okay, we're talking about Japan here. It then changes to: "soccer is the passion that unites a continent". Umm...now we're talking about all of Asia. To make things worse, there's a map of Japan on the screen when this is read. C'mon!
3. "The good, the bad, and the ugly" commerical lasts for an eternity, with "Wild West" sound effects and sepia tone and everything. The kicker comes at the end, though: Diego Forlan in a Man Utd shirt! True, they might not have known that Diego would be transferred (the rest of us were only hoping), but why even show Forlan in a promotion to begin with? Yes, he's a nice guy, but he's seen as a joke by just about everyone--even Jeremy and Michelle join in with Bobby McMahon in laughing at Forlan on the Report!
Feel free to add your own kvetch.

The worst commercial is that Army one that they show every time they go to commercial. Also, the Fox Movie Channel commercial is annoying. Every year they say that each season will be "fiercer than ever".

I don't think anyone watching has any delusions that "last year was great--but this season will beat them all!!!" If anything, the Premiership is getting worse--or so a lot of people believe.

I always find it ironic when they go from a "Girls Gone Wild" commercial back to the FSW Report and Michelle Lissel.
My other fav is the "sausage" salesman ad, y'know the one that starts with the cleavage shot.
Hilariously bad.

I have to agree when I first saw the Army commerical I thought it was a video game. I can't believe no one is complaining that the commerical shows middle eastern decent people, but then again that's who we are fighting. I'm not sure if their trying to sell that you have to be tough to survive or that they just don't give the troops enough food and equipment to survive.

"Diet failure is not your fault ...."
Boy, how much FSW do we watch that we can recite the first line from all 6 of the network's commercials. :)

Here's annoying right here:
"It's just my opinion, but I'm right!"
Any opinion on Summer Sanders' The Sports List?

Yeah, I agree on this one. I am not sure I am understanding why it is on all the time. Does the Special Forces Unit seriously think that we the viewers of FSW are the future of the Special Forces Unit? I would hope not. I do not see that commercial on any other channel. "You have packed enough supplies for 5 days........It's Day 12." I wonder how many people have signed up because of this commercial?

"You've been straining your urine through your shirt to drink because you've run out of water. It's 120F and you're wearing 50 pounds of gear on top of your uniform. And your partner just farted in your air-tight space...Do you have what it takes?"

LOL! That is gonna be the next version of the advertisement. I am not gonna rip on the Special Forces or any other advertiser for that matter, but I do question why some of them are on so much and why they think FSW is the place to advertise.

Am I wrong, but aren't Special Forces picked from troops that have already joined? It's not like you apply to the CIA and say, "I want to be a secret agent"--it's something that they see in you, and you're specially selected. So sending away for the video and joining based on that is probably a good way to end up being a grunt, but not capturing Osama on your own.

As I mentioned in another post, I am not ripping on them for advertising, I am thankful. I just find it kind of strange that they look to Soccer fans to be the future of the Special Forces unit.

I just assumed the commercial was a reflection of this being a Murdoch network, sort of like how Oliver North is a fair and balanced journalist on one of Fox's other cable network.

The Army wants smart, motivated, and fit young men for that line of service. Many of the ideal candidates for Special Forces can be found on you local soccer fields. The Army places ads anywhere they think they'll find that audience. You'll find ads like that on a number of sports and sports related programs. If I'm not mistaken, the US Army has been an MLS sponsor in the past.
