Anyone else heard "Leaving New York"? Really good - they have gotten away from the crap experimenting on the last two albums. Up and Reveal had lots of songs that I didn't like so much on the CD, but loved in concert.

You can hear it streamed at www.remhq.com if you want. Worth a listen. Getting psyched about the tour.

I think it sounds much better than anything off of Reveal, but i already told you that.

I just read on their Web site that it's available on iTunes now.

I've heard it a couple of times on local radio here and really like it. I agree, it seems like they might be getting back to what they do best.

i'll check it out.
their no. 1 on my list of bands who have lost it.
they used to be my favorite but ever since new adventures in hi-fi, I've found them unlistenable.
I'm dying for them to recapture their sound .... i'll definitely be listening to this.

That does sound pretty decent. I haven't bought any new REM since Monster. Maybe that will change.

I gotta admit I was excited by the new song, and then I got more excited when I heard they were playing the Murat in Indy. A 2500 seat venue. Then I look at ticket prices, $50 and $75 dollars. This for a band that 10 years back signed the richest record deal in history at that time.

REM is always talked about as one of those bands with integrity or principles or whatever. Screw that. What the ******** do they need $75 dollars a ticket for. They aren't exactly on skid row.

I think I am the strange REM fan who loves New Adventures in Hi-Fi, Up and Reveal a lot. I think top to bottom New Adventures is my favorite REM record. I think their older stuff is good, but I have just found myself enjoying the new stuff better.

it's weird because I would say Monster is my favorite album of theirs and not too many people would agree with that,

I have a somewhat different take than you. I love the old stuff..."Life's Rich.." and "Chronic Town" are my two favorites....but I also really like "New Adventures..." I think it's a very good record and an interesting (but listenable) departure from their older stuff. That being said...I haven't been a big fan of the records since "New Adventures.."

This is exactly why I love these guys. They have hit so many different ranges that people can really enjoy them at such different stages of their career. But if you heard them play some of their really, really old stuff on this last tour - including "Permanent Vacation" for the first time since 1981 - you appreciate how astoundingly talented they are because those songs haven't lost a thing.

Agreed...even the "new" old stuff is good. I have an old bootleg from the "Document" era that has "Bad Day" on it. The bootleg lists it as "Public Service Announcement."

The more I hear this song I have to say the backing vocals (Mills?) are what absolute sell me on it.

Awesome. I have a demo version of it from that same time frame.

[REM geek]Did you know that they scrapped Bad Day and kept the portions that theyliked for what eventually turned into End of the World?[/REM geek]

I recall hearing that once. Certainly makes sense.
Slight non-sequitar....when I was in school in Boston, I had a friend who went to BU who swore up and down that Stipe was saying..."don't get caught in Warren Towers"....which was one of the big dorms on the BU campus. I could never convince him otherwise.... :D
