1. Jonathan Woodgate for 14 million pounds? Newcastle must have spent the whole negotiation session trying not to burst out in laughter and give away the fact that they just sold Real Madrid a big fat bag of oregano.

2. What is that mysterious little symbol on the FSW broadcasts in the digitized score/time graphic? A bolt? Does anyone know? At least I'll have something to distract and interest me this season any time a Norwich City game is on.

3. Robbie Savage just won't cut that hair, will he? He must have lost a bet.

4. Robbie Fowler's goal against Fulham received goal of the week honors from FSW. It should have been blooper of the week, at best. Fowler was luckier than Wayne Rooney at his high school prom that it even went anywhere but sideways or towards his own goal, much less that it ended up in the top corner. If Alan Smith's goal doesn't earn number one goal honors this week on the FSW report, there is no justice in the world. Smith's volley was from a similar angle and ended up in a similar difficult-to-reach corner of the net, but his beautiful piece of improvisation was infinitely more skillful, and, above all, executed as perfectly as it was conceived.

5. One man I don't ever want to get into a bar fight with is Blackburn Rovers' manager, Graham Souness.

6. Jose Mourinho wears quite the snazzy matching tie and shirt sets. Regis Philbin's Who Wants To Be A Millionaire? must still be big in Portugal.

7. In a sign of these venal times, the EPL referees now wear sponsorship advertisements on their sleeves. So the refs can be bought after all. Who knew?

8. Christiano Ronaldo and teammate Eric Djemba-Djemba (the player so bad they named him twice) have this whole tape-up-the-earrings-for-the-games-look going on. Sweet, guys.

9. Speaking of Djemba-Djemba, I will never know how Sir Alex ever favored him and Kleberson ahead of Nicky Butt. He must have been hitting the bottle pretty hard last season. I haven't felt this bad about a player being forced off a squad since my San Francisco Giants traded away Will Clark.

10. Wouldn't FSW broadcasts get bigger Nielson ratings if they scrolled the lyrics to the chants being sung in the stands--complete with a bouncing soccer ball so we could sing along in perfect time? I imagine the puritans at the FCC are the reason this hasn't been implemented yet. With the tactics Mr. Mourinho has employed thus far, it may not be long before we see this graphic rolling across the bottom of the screen: "1 nil to the... Chelsea."

11. If George Bush is going to take the credit for Iraq's success in Olympic soccer, he should take the blame every time the U.S. gets bounced from the World Cup.
