How much do you think he's worth and how much do you think we'll get for him?

4-6-8 mil?
Thing is, is he classed as a 1season wonder now?

4 million max. Only Tottenham or Man City would be dumb enough to pay more than that :p

Why would O'Shea be about to leave?

Recoup on the Rooney deal. I think the Guardian got it spot on..

Could he be part of the Rooney deal? Once Wes and Rio are back, O'Shea really won't have a position on the field. This also could be a sign of faith in Spector and his potential...who knows?

Can't see this happening at all, especially since who knows when Heinze will actually show up at Old Trafford. Our defense is still too shaky to sell such a player, regardless of his admitted lack of form last year.

Roy's injury only makes this more and more unlikely... O'Shea could be cover for him and even if he does not play there he is a defender and Keane has been filling in there and even when in midfield the part of our game weakened by Keane's injury is our defending... so yeah... unlikely...

Depends on what Moyes wants...O'Shea's name has been thrown about all week..he could well be a pacifier.either as part of this deal or to recoup from Newcastle some of the cash spent on rooney

I think sir alex has enough faith in spector to let o'shea go and we would get about 5 mil for him .really not a bad player on his day.

Terrible time to sell him.

He has obvious talent. He's big, fast, and fairly skillful. When he got a run at left back last year, he was pretty good. He's been terrible at CB so far. I think he's going to end up as a very good, but not great player. I think he's worth between 5 and 8m... but that we wouldn't get more than 2.5-4m max right now.

Selling players who are off-form and undervalued is a bad business, especially at O'Shea's age.

Good point I hadn't thought about, Haven. Selling O'Shea now would certainly be a case of selling low.

Yes! O'Shea was impressive the year we won the title. he can play a great centre-back as well as on the left. Now he has added midfield to his resume. He is just 23 and though he had some terrible games, its just a matter of time. The whole backfield was not always up to par.

But on the other hand...if he was a part of a deal for Rooney he could certianly help Everton or whichever team he eventually ends up with. I only hope he is used wisely, if he is leaving, as part of a Rooney deal or for a formidable transfer fee. This kid has a good career ahead.

I do agree that John O'Shea does have some talent, but I am not convinced that his talent is good enough to be on display for Manchester United on a weekly basis. With Rio coming back from suspension, Heinze coming from the Olympics, the defense will come together and there will not be a spot for O'Shea to play. I do not think he is good enough in the midfield for Manchester United. If getting rid of John O'Shea is part of the equation to getting Mr. Rooney, then I am all for it!

O'Shea could go to Newcastle as a leverage player for Kieron Dyer, whom I think can be had cheaply, AKA less than what Madrid paid for Owen.

Personally, I think the Rooney move, if completed, would mean the end for Solskjaer. And then SAF has problems w/ 4 First XI-worthy Strikers, even though Man Utd has dealt with this before; it can't last long. Buying Rooney would probably piss off either Smith or Saha, probably Saha. Which would be what he gets for leaving Fulham the way he did; however, moving to Man Utd for Rooney means he has less pressure on his shoulders than at Everton, especially as Ruud's partner.

1. John O'Shea has had more good games for Man Utd than Heinze.

2. O'Shea was our best defender two years ago. You just can't play that well for the entire season and not have talent.

3. When he got a consistent run of games last year at left back, I don't think he was any worse than Neville. Just not good as a CB.

1. I will take my chances with Heinze. I have a feeling he is going to be worth the money we spent for him

2. The key word in your statement #2 is "two years ago." Yes, he was good two years ago, but what has he done lately? What did he do last year, what did he do in the pre-season this year and what has he done in the forst few games of this year? Nothing much is the answer to all of them. If you want an above average defender back there, that is what you get with O'Shea. Manchester United does not need above average defenders, they need great defenders.

3. I think O'Shea has been given plenty of chances at many different positions for United. While either Neville may not be the greatest, I will take them over O'Shea any day.

Ah. A feeling. Most people had one of those about Veron ;).

Talent doesn't just suddenly leave. He played too well over too long of a span for it to be a fluke. O'Shea needs to be shaken - not thrown away.

Except that, when played consistently at left back, his play has been consistently good. Certainly better than P Neville. He's faster, stronger, larger, and more skillful.

O'Shea's play didn't decline last year until he was tried at CB. He sucked there. Then he wasn't great when he returned to fullback. He's young and lost confidence. None of which is a compelling reason to give up.

Um.... Rio? You're right that O'Shea was much better all around back in '02 but haven't the last 8 months shown that Ferdinand makes the ManU defense work? It'll be interesting to see if guys like JOSh and Silvestre magically get better once he's back.
