Sky Sports News have claimed that Newcastle United have made a £20 million bid for Everton and England striker Wayne Rooney.
The Magpies are thought to have tabled the massive bid for the England international as they look to spend some of the money from the sale of Jonathan Woodgate.

It is his last year anyway.

I can't see Everton accepting "only" 20 mil until next Summer, unless Rooney flops this year in the league...

It would be an ideal situation for Newcastle and Rooney... Rooney, who is coming back from injury would not be forced to play right away, and would get eased into the team more than likely.. also, Newcastle will pick up their new striker just before their best striker retires while still at the top of his game... Shearer could show Rooney a trick or two...

Yeah, but they already have:
Kluivert
Bellamy
Amoebi
etc.

I have heard rumblings on your board about wanting Rooney also and you guys have:
Ruud
Saha
Giggs
etc.
So what is the difference? ;)

This is huge news. I am hoping that Manchester United responds to this with a bid. I do not think it would be stupid money spent. In terms of Rooney, it is now or never for United to get him. I read an interview from David Gill saying he did not want to spend bad money out of desperation. I do not think that would be the case here. Rooney would be great for United and the signing would help the team. I hope it happens.

Ruud, Saha, Smith, you mean.
The difference is League, FA Cup and Champions League aspirations.
We need more cover at striker than Newcastle. :D

Ruud - Hurt ... with an injury that in many cases takes longer than the prescribed "month" to come back from - especially to come back in top form.
Saha - Hurt ... with an injury that United officials must presume could reoccur.
Giggs - Not a forward.
Forlan - Sold.
Bellion - Some nice work Saturday, but not ready for Prime Time just yet.
Smith - Only established attacker healthy right now.
Ole - Hurt ... Out for year. Perhaps out for career.
Too much depth is a better problem to have than not enough. I think Smith will have a fine year, but it wouldn't hurt to table a bid for Rooney and if a Saha or a Bellion need to be sold later as a result - so be it.

I agree and I was mainly joking with Ian about his logic......
But I meant to say Smith rather than GIggs but you obviously got my drift....

Ah, Newcastle are trying to stay relevant. Odd how a team goes from being The Next Great Thing to a pre-season also-ran in the space of a year. Hard to see Newcastle contending this year, even with Rooney. Completely uncertain as to why Rooney would want to go to Newcastle. Newcastle seem almost like a worse situation than Everton:
1. They won't win anything.
2. They don't have any pressure to sell.
So, he'd be at a team he might want to leave to join one of the Big 3... who wouldn't necessarily let him go.
(yes, I already posted this in the summer transfer thread... but the discussion seems to be here, so...)

We aint going to get him. Too stuborn too old hat. Just put it down with the others that got away. The club is run by people with strong interest on financials like the chairman is boss of Centrica, Gill is an accountant, et al. The share price and quaterley results hold more weight, bringing the wage bill down, no more spending 20+ million on players and keeping the club 'sound'. What they don't realise is success on the pitch is directly reflected in terms of sales of it. Kids in China won't buy the shirt if success starts to wain. Did I mention Rooney is more popular than Beckham in China? Oh and he's a good player t'boot.

Kluivert was a foolish signing, and its only a matter of time until Bellamy breaks down yet again.
The move makes sense, imho, especially as Rooney is still injured, and with his age Shearer is likely to spend some time on the bench anyway.

That being said, I don't think that Newcastle can offer a fee that Everton can't say no to.
