I am pretty sure Ty Keogh was serious toniight when he said he felt that referees should cary a can of blue spraypaint to mark the 10 yards from free kicks so that reffs could give cautions to those who crossed it................Has to move to the top of the list of most stupid things said during an MLS game.

i think he mentioned it previously...

during the world cup i believe.

still stupid, but we have come to expect that...

I think this is actually done in some countries.

Yeah, real stupid. They do it in Brazil and it will likely be adopted in various European leagues soon as well. It is a terrific idea. The game doesn't need the constant moving wall to hold down scoring even further.

Well if the referee would've had some control of this game it might've prevented the constant encroachment of the wall.

Oh, man! I don't care how many countries they do it in. Or who endorses it. It's stupid. Referees walking around with hazardous materials like cans of spray paint in their pockets is not a good idea.

If they're going to do it, they should do it right. Marking the field is not the job of a referee, so they should have the ground crew come out and draw an arc of with a radius of exactly 10 yards. That should be enough of a crutch for referees who need a crutch. -Not to mention taking a lot of time and making the game into a joke. (but not any more of a joke than if the referee does it)

Sheesh! A referee can give a card, line or no line. (The card should be in the pocket that doesn't have the spray paint in it)

It a stupid idea, and I'm not just saying that because Ty Keough endorses it. (although that's not necessarily a bad reason)

Blue lines. Yea, right!

I'm embarrassed for the leagues in Brasil that do this, and for any leagues that are considering it, and I feel a great deal of sympathy for referees who may be asked to make fools of themselves by doing it. If I ever see it happen I'll be hard-pressed not to make fun of it.

I've survived (and made fun of) blue cards. I can survive blue lines. Anyone for red lines? A player can really get in trouble for crossing one of those!

Its even more pathetic when in an mls game there are football lines every 5 yards across the field and they still cannot manage to count off 10.

Uh, that was Jack Edwards who gave the idea of the the blue paint, and it was him some months ago who gave the idea of the colored bean bag for the same purpose. Even Ty couldn't think up an idea that stupid. And everyone said they would miss Jack!!

I'd hate to see Ty get blamed for something he didn't do.

i'm stealing this from someone else who talked about the brazilian can of foam before the BS Big Crash. a problem is they they'd have to draw a 20 yd diameter circle...10 yds in all directions.

good point about the football field lines.

there is no such problem. they use it when a wall is being set up. and it remains a good idea.

I agree; it is a great idea. And it isn't blue paint; it's some sort of low-intensity foam spray that disappears in about 45 seconds -- just long enough to set up the wall and restart.

Thing is, the Brazilians thought it up first. Shows why they are 5x champs. Always thinking of what's next, not harping on what's past!

Does the ref mark the 10 yards with string or something, or does he just eyeball it and then spray the line where he thinks it should be? Just curious--I've never seen it done.

nsa had the solution to this MONTHS ago.

Remember that the fouling team must give 10 yards in ALL DIRECTIONS. All that a referee has to do is carry around a hula-hoop with a 20-yard diameter and toss it on the field with the dead ball in it's center to keep all opponents away!

He puts the ball down and walks off the yardage. He then sprays a small 6"-1' line and the theatrics are cut way down. It goes very fast and speeds the game up as the ref doesn't have to keep moving the wall back over and over.

That makes way too much sense, but you don't understand what most are saying: Unless it's done in England, it's a bad idea. ;-)

What the ref needs to do is martch the distance and set the wall. If someone walks towards the spot of the fee kick they should take out the can of spray paint and a lighter and shoot a big fire ball across the wall. That will stop 'em. :)

Maybe I am stupid, but I do not understand why the referees need blue lines or bean bags to enforce the 10 yards. The already have the correct tool to do it. It is call the yellow plastic. All it takes is for yellow plastic to start showing up the was FIFA have asked the referees in a memo a couple of years ago.

I do not buy that players need another physical object to respect the 10 yards, because there already have one. When setting up the wall, the referee is the line (he would have to go there anyway to put down the blue line). After the wall is set up, the players them, selves are the line. if they start to creep forward, bring out the plastic. If the LOTG on 'failure to keep the required distance..." were enforced with plastic like they should, the problem would go away.

I know that some people feel that a yellow card is too harsh a punishment for a little encroachment, like when the wall creeps forward a little after it is set up. I am one of them. I would like FIFA to give the referees a more effective tool that they could use. The one I would like to see is that is there is a violation of the 10 yards, then the referee would have the option of giving the caution, if it is blatant, or changing the 10 yards to 15 yards. And I do not mean only a wall violation only. If a defender goes and stands 5 yards behind the ball to direct the wall, then the distance becomes 15 yards all around.

A better I dea would be for refs to carry a can of pepper spray to spay players with if they encroach on the free kick.

I would guarantee that wall would stay in place after the first time a player got sprayed.

;)

BTW- I was watching a little Brazilian Football on FSW. I was wondering what the heck those cans were for. I guess this thread answers it.

No one cares what you "buy". The fact is this WORKS.

It speeds up the game. He marks off the distance, bends over and sprays the foam. That takes all of an additional second vis a vis just walking the distance. In fact, it ends up taking less time than watching the ref point to a spot on the ground and having the players turn to him and then point as if the ball is 12 or 13 yards away and they are being unjustly penalized. This makes it black and white. Here's the spot. Stand here. Stand any closer and I card you. There is no doubt. The players stand even with that spot and the game goes on. I've seen it in action and it cuts down markedly on the histrionics.

Your solution to the problem has already been proven a failure for years and it takes minutes to enforce.
