Woodgate to Madrid for 13.4 million? A case of over spending again I see..

He's worth that and more. We (Leeds) got totally screwed when Newcastle bought him for £9m

As a Leeds season ticket holder who has seen both him and Rio play on many many occasions, i can tell you that overall, Woody is a better defender than Rio.

I agree Woodgate is a far better defender than Rio. But Woodgate has suffered a lot of injuries the past 2 years. Since joining Newcastle in January 2003 he only played 23 games.

My only concern is Woodgate injury prone??

I don't question his ability, but his phyiscal durability.

It is the injury question that makes this deal so strange. He is currently injured and hasn't had a long stretch without injury. So this seems a very risky or "desperate" move. Hope it works out for him.

Jonathan Woodgate for 13.4 million pounds? Newcastle must have spent the whole negotiation session trying not to burst out in laughter and give away the fact that they just sold Real Madrid a big fat bag of oregano.

Woody just des not seem to be able to stay healthy. Real invested so much and if he is going to be as injured as he has been at newcastle, they will have to have a laugh.

He is great, but the injuries really have kept him down. If he can be healthy, then i think Real would have gotten a bargin. They need all the defensive help they can get.

It does seem a lot as he hasn't played a lot in the past couple of years but i think time will tell that 13.4m is well spent :)

Well put it this way: if the defensive capabilities that they totally - and I mean totally lacked last year are provided this year by Samuel and (an even partially/occasionally fit) Woodgate, then Real Madrid stand a better chance than anyone in Spain of winning La Liga and a better chance than anyone in Europe of winning the European Cup.

Come back and tell me all about how £13m for Woodgate is too much then.
