Who do you think is the best striker for Manchester UNited since the Premiership was formed?
Ruud van Nistelrooy (68 goals in 98 League appearances; 0.69 goals/game): signed for Manchester United on April 2001. He had a great first season at Old Trafford scoring 44 goals despite missing the majority of the previous season with injury. As an out and out striker he rarely creates chances for himself but can occasionally beat off defenders, charge into the box and slot the ball past the goalkeeper at angles which seems almost impossible to score. Great vision to find open spaces where he can calmly tap the ball into the net. EPL top scorer with 25 goals and Player of the Year in 2002-03
Dwight Yorke (48 goals in 96 appearances; 0.50 goals/game): Signed for United in 1998 for a then-record £12.6 million. His friend ship with teammate Andy Cole led them to become a dynamic scoring duo and he proved worthy of the sterling paid for his abilities scoring 29 goals that season earning him the distinction of “the Carling Player of the Year”. EPL leading scorer in 1998-99 with 18 goals.
Andy Cole (93 goals in 195 appearances; 0.48 goals/game): formed a lethal strike partnership with Dwight Yorke in 1998-99 that saw United clinch the treble (the Premiership, FA Cup and European Cup). He has a lightning pace, is able to hold the ball with his back to the goal and a lethal shooting. United all-time top scorer in the European Cup with 19 goals. Sold to Blackburn after United signed van Nistelrooy.
Eric Cantona (64 goals in 143 appearances; 0.45 goals/game): “The King” was signed from Leeds in November 1992 for just £1.2 million which turned out to be the best bargain in English football. In 1993 he led United to their first league title in 26 years and EPL titles in 93, 94, and 96. Famous for his shirt collar turned up, he not only influenced his teammates’ play at United with his deadly passing, flicks, and back heels but also played an important role in the shaping of players like Scholes, Giggs and Beckham. Despite his retirement in June 1997, all the trophies won by United and all the famous players wearing the Red Devils’ jersey cannot erase the memories left by the play of Cantona.
Ole Gunnar Solskjaer (84 goals in 213 appearances; 0.39 goals/game): famous for scoring goals coming in as a sub. The “super-sub” is loyal to Manchester United despite the fact that he rarely gets the opportunity to start. In any other team he would be a first team starter but he is happy to contribute to the team. Has the ability to create chances and knows when and where to be into position. In 2002/03 he was often employed in the right side of midfield where he showed his crossing ability.
Teddy Sheringham (31 goals in 104 appearances; 0.30 goals/game): He made up for his lack of pace with intelligent passing and creativity. His aerial play gives United an attacking threat when coming on as a substitute; something that Cole, Yorke, and Solskjaer lack.
If there is an award to the best striker for Manchester United who should be crowned the winner? or how will you rank them if possible.
To me the best is Cantona because he started the United revolution and he is and will be a strong influence for Uiited and the fans
I think this is my longest and best post since joining BigSoccer. This deserves some positive reputation. :D
