Rangers News:

No word yet on the status of Tony Thorpe and Richard Edghill for Saturday. Marc Bircham was cleared to return to training this week (http://www.sportinglife.com/football/nationwide1/news/story_get.dor?STORY_NAME=nonwire_soccer/04/08/16/manual_121216.html) and is hopeful of a return to the first team by the end of the month. Dan Sh!ttu played 45 minutes in a reserve match yesterday. Georges Santos scored a late winner as the R's reserves beat Colchester's reserves, 1-0 (http://www.qpr.premiumtv.co.uk/page/NewsDetail/0,,10373~553701,00.html). Cook, Cureton, and Forbes went a half each, while McLeod, Santos, and Lewis Hamilton got 90. The report doesn't indicate that Cook or Cureton came out of it any worse for wear, so I expect they're both available this weekend.

The Opponent:

Former loan Ranger Lee Camp has started all three matches for Derby, surprising many by beating out Lee Grant, who performed very well in winning the job last season. Camp was called up as the reserve keeper for the England U-21 match this week.

Derby has opened with a very tough schedule -- they started with a 0-1 away loss to Leeds, followed that with a tough 1-2 home loss to Leicester City, and then defeated Ipswich Town, 3-2, at home. Two relegated Premiership teams and a team that made the play-offs last year -- ouch. So, their 1 win-2 loss record seems a bit misleading, since they've played all three tough teams well.

The Series:

Derby leads the series -- Rangers have won 9, the Rams have won 13, and there have been 12 draws. The R's record against Derby in league play is 8-9-11. The teams haven't met since spending four years together in the old, old Division 1 (now Premiership) between 87/88 and 90/91. During that stretch, Derby won 3, Rangers won 2, and there were 3 draws.

The Referee:

Mike Riley has been assigned. He worked Everton/Arsenal last weekend, issuing three yellows. He worked two matches in Euro 2004 (Sweden/Bulgaria and Latvia/Germany). The bulk of his work last year was in the Premier League, with some First Division games, plus a couple of Champions League games and a Euro qualifier. He worked the FA Cup Final in 2002. His last QPR match was an 0-2 away loss to Fulham in the First Division in March '01. The last Derby match I can find for him was an April 2002 away loss at Liverpool in the Premiership.

completely irrelevant but me and Kev were at that Latvia/Germany match and Riley's performance didn't inspire confidence in his reffing and it was no surprise he didn't get a QF

Well, a thouroughly frustrating afternoon that saw my personal home unbeaten run at LR end (last time I saw Rangers lose at home - Feb '99... granted I missed a few season in between). On a less selfish side, the team played hard yesterday and we created chances, but otherwise we were clearly second best to a pretty decent side. Derby looked the Championship team, and we looked like a team that was fighting out of their weight class. Painfull to say, but true at the moment.

There are some positives though. Two disallowed goals in the first half were well set up and neatly taken - but I did not see the replay so Im not sure about the calls. We played aggressively in the first portion of the match, but the Derby goals did deflate us a bit and the second portion of the first half was pretty drab. The obvious sign from both their goals is that we always look vulnerable defending set pieces - something that must be improved.

Second half was alright - we passed well but struggled to create clear chances. Derby were comfy with the 2 goal edge. Martin Rowlands had a good match and should have scored late, but pulled his shot wide. Lee Cook had an encouraging, but not solid (re)debut. I see what a lot of the Watford fans have said about his lack of strength - but he adds pace and skill. I think he'll be a help.

As I say every week, we need big Dan back in the team - good to see him on the bench. Birch might help as well. Bean and Johnson show great determination win the ball well, but they don't help us going forward much. I think that we should play a diamond with Gallen behind the forwards and Birch, Bean or Johnson in the defensive role. Don't think it will happen - although it might be the only way for Kev to hold onto a starting spot. I'm not sure if two older, target forwards that hold the ball up well, work for us in our situation this year. That said, Olly will probably keep it that way.

I'll be interested to see how the team reacts on Tuesday in the Cup match. I think they'll want to come out and win, help the confidence. Still have a fantastic attitude in this squad, determination and the willingness to try and play football - so it could be a lot worse.

I guess this makes for a long flight home.

These first 4 games certainly seem to say that we have a long, difficult season ahead of us.

Nah - Atouk and I will see us win tomorrow night (God, we better). We had a nice beery evening at the Bushranger Saturday despite the loss. A mini BS forum meeting (well, myself, Atouk and Lloydy) - fun stuff.

Two disallowed goals in the first half were well set up and neatly taken - but I did not see the replay so Im not sure about the calls. The Mirror said the replay showed that he was not offside, so but for a wrong call, we're up 1-0 in the first minute and it's a whole different match.

Overall, a bit of a disappointment, if only because I thought that after Sunderland we'd put forth a more complete effort.

Rowlands and Cook showed some flashes on the wings, and I thought Bignot again played pretty well. We were poor in the middle of the park -- we both weren't able to get the ball to our dangerous wingers enough, but weren't creative enough in the middle to do much else but hoof it.

Kevin, I agree that the Furs/Gallen pairing isn't working at the moment. While neither had a great game on Saturday, Furs had been on better form thus far, so I'm hopeful of seing Furlong teamed with Cureton up front tonight. And let's hope Thorpe gets back quickly too, because we need all of the limited number of weapons we have.

The backline didn't play that well, but except for our too-slack defending on set pieces, still might have gotten away with enough on the day.

Despite the result, I have a fun day. Met a few new guys down at O'Donoghue's, one of whom invited me to watch the match from a box, which was interesting. Got to see my mates down at the White Horse (before the match, but missed them after), then had a few with Kevin and Lloydy at the BR. Always good to see you two.

The crowd was good, 15+ K, but I'd hoped for a few more. Derby could have brought more, although that's a long trip, and there were a few empty seets in the upper corners of Ellerslie Road (couldn't see SA road, as that's where the box was).

Given how difficult Championship wins will be to come by this season, I sure want a win tonight against Swansea!
