OK, y'all. I was checking out the http://www.iloveutahsoccer.com/ website, and I stumbled accross their poll.
One of hte questions was:
Which is your favourite name?
Salt Lake Highlanders
Real Salt Lake - RSL
Alliance SL
Utah United
Salt Lake Front
Now I checked out the results, and "Utah United" was the clear leader. This upsets me. I figured y'all would want to get a name unique to the MLS, rather than sharing a name with DCU. Do you really want that kind of name?
If you don't, please go to the page and place a vote. I'm afraid that these numbers really do matter. Oh, and the number two spot goes to Alliance SL. Doesn't that sound much better?

Agreed, they should not have a conflict of team names in MLS. There is only one United and that is DC, so please call yourselves the Highlanders already and forget about making asses of yourselves.

there's no way Utah United is the choice of the people. That's just lame. all we need is someone who has got a couple of hours to blow voting for something over and over again -- looks like the fine folks at i4 solutions haven't quite figured out how to limit an internet user to one vote.

Personally, I think Alliance whatever is lame. It seriously sounds like a bank. In fact, I think all of the choices are terrible. Out of the available choices, I think Utah of Salt Lake United is a best. If it weren't for DC already being 'United', would people still hate it? In EPL there are multiple 'United' teams and it's not a big deal.
If I had my choice I would go for Salt Lake SC. But it's not. All I know is that I HATE alliance and think Highlanders sounds like a minor league knock-off.

Utah is going to end up with an aweful name. Here are the current results to the poll:
Salt Lake Highlanders (14.37%)
Real Salt Lake - RSL (10.25%)
Alliance SL (30.03%)
Utah United (32.49%)
Salt Lake Front (12.87%)
The two worst names are leading the pack. Then there is the front? Where did that come from? If they want to use Real, use the English translation, Royal. American media will have a field day with a team name Real, pronounced in English. "I guess they're not fake!" Dumb. Highlanders is the best name in the bunch, and I don't even like it that much. Someone stuff the ballot box away from United, Alliance, Real and Front.

I just discovered this poll is easy to "stuff". Just vote, press your back button, and vote again. It counts them all.

This MUST be whats happening. A week ago, Highlanders had a huge lead. Results dont change that drastically for no reason. A few people really like United and Alliance.

Any number of of teams among several divisions in England carry the United moniker. It's almost as common as Ltd or Inc. in the world of business -- to which pro soccer also belongs. But God forbid we should adopt any example from across the pond.
"There is only one United and that is DC," would be a joke anywhere but here. I won't go so far as to call anyone an ass for making such a statement, but the word 'provincial' does come to mind.
If the attempt is to evoke images of the Scottish Highlands, calling a team "Highlanders" is either romatically naive or merely pretentious, take your pick. While Salt Lake City is high country -- 4,390' ASL, with a range from 4,200 to 5,200' ASL --"Hill Billies" would be closer to home, and much more "American,' which seems to be a major concern on these boards.
Hill Billies -- go with it. I'm sure you'll wear it well.

I hate this double standard; that when euro trash want to do things in a euro trash way, it is cultured. but when Americans want to do things in an American way, it is provincial.

And when was the last time you were in Salt Lake City? If you found yourself surrounded by "Hill Billies," then clearly you were not in the city at all, but rather out in Vernal or someplace like that. Or it could be that you came to SLC in 1933 and are still amazed at the backward folk living here. The reality is, Salt Lake City is very nice, and the people are very cultured. A ridiculous number of people in Utah speak a second language. I speak fluent Italian. My father speaks fluent Russian, French, and Ukrainian. My mother speaks fluent Russian and German.
Furthermore, as has been discussed several times, a very large number of Utahns trace their heritage to Scotland. My family came from a place called Glenisla. So naming the team "Highlanders" actually does make sense, like Celtics makes sense in Boston. So from now on, statti zito, sei proprio scemo.

I think I saw "Salt Lake Union" as a suggested name on the "really narrowed down" thread, and that (or SLC Union/Union SLC) would actually be pretty cool, though Highlanders is the name that best flows off the tongue.

Oh, please. Everyone knows that anyone who's not from the east or west coast is a hillbilly.

I think what this poll really says is that none of the names are acceptable and Utah United is really a protest vote for better choices.
