Liverpool complete the signing of Real Madrid player Nunez. Be interesting to see how he does. Hopefully he will be half decent. I imagine Finnan is on his way out.

or more preferably, back into defense where he belongs.

Let's hope he stays, we need the depth. And we still don't know how the shuffle will end.

Nunez hasn't won the starting job just yet. It's still Finnan's to lose, though I don't think he's been very effective there, either against Spurs or in pre-season.

Let's just call them Liverpool South. They seem to be buying right wingers as soon as we can replace them. Maybe they'll line up for Nunez next week.

And they can spot a deal when they see it... Benitez seems hell bent on leaving us short of back up.
I just hope they get a decent price for him.

There is reports that Tottenham are the favorites to take Finnan. With Nunez and Alonso on board it seems Finnan days are numbered. 2Million sterling is the number being thrown out.
Question-
Does anyone remember how much we paid for Finnan?
Thanks

I think it was 4 million. Of course we are going to lose money on players that proved to be not good enough for Liverpool. Finnan is not good enough on defense to play at the back, and not good enough going foward to play in midfield. Yes, he would be a nice backup, but if Rafa could use the 2 million towards a player that can really help us, he should go for it.
Spurs is a logical place because they need a replacement for Carr.

It seems a bit early to decide Josemi is going to be brilliant at right back, you would think Benetiz might want to wait a bit and see if he can handle the premier league.

Does anyone remember how much we paid for Finnan? The BBC has more information on this. I guess we'll just have to wait and see how much Rafa can squeeze out of this deal. I hope the money goes to good use, namely a versatile right-sided defender/defensive midfielder as a backup.

So, we give up a versatile guy who can't play either position...for a versatile guy who can't really play either position? ;^)

While early signs indicate that Josemi is a quality player, I want to reiterate my long-standing wish that the club would buy a pacy CB. That way there would be some much-needed speed back there and Carra could go out to the right if Josemi couldn't go for whatever reason. And how great would it be if Nunez turns out to be a pleasant surprise? With Xabi on his way in, La Rafalution is well underway and I think we'll be better off once the dust has settled...

So, we give up a versatile guy who can't play either position...for a versatile guy who can't really play either position? ;^)You raise a good point. Let me clarify my reasoning on this, of course allowing for any disagreement since I'm new around here. With Nunez and Josemi onboard, and Alonso seemingly Kop-bound (knock on wood), Rafa has brought in players who can play in their intended positions. Obviously this is important for players who are bought with the intention to start many, if not most, games. When it comes to "backup" players, whose purpose is to cover during times of injury or affect tactical changes during a match (e.g., chasing goals or defending a slim lead in the last ten minutes), my thinking is they need to preferably be useful in more than one role. A versatile defensive-minded MR/DR can come on as a sub and offer support in either the middle or last third of the pitch, but at the same time offer the attacking qualities common to both the full back and wide middle positions (namely, pace and crossing). We've spent the bulk of our money on players who are intended starters, so I'm assuming we don't have a lot of scratch to come up with both a quality right back and a wide midfield backup (both areas we need more depth in, imo). So unless you are Chelsea, whose backup and rotation players last year included men who would start every game on any other team, I'm guessing it would be best to search out and buy a player who can do both (look at the usefulness of Carra, who can play in either the DC or DR positions to a fairly reliable degree). Now back to your original point, if we were to go this route we'd obviously have to buy somebody who does what Finnan does, only much better :-)

I dont know.. He looks pretty damn good. I wathed him in person at Giants Stadium and from what I read he played well in the CL match. He looked good at Spurs. He seems like a bruiser and doesnt give any regard to his own body. Sounds like a premier league player already just with a spanish name. This guy couldn't have had a better start and that coupled with his form in his prior years I think we have ourselves a starter for a number of years and a PERFECT link up guy to Gerrard and he has unlimited amt of energy.
In addition we paid 3.6million for Finnan and possibly get 2 or slightly more. I say take it. I think the SPurs game was a B- for him and they saw him play one of his best games for us. With Henchoz, Riise, Carragher, Josemi, Sami..It looks like we would need to develop only 1 more player or bring in a freebie with some good experience.

It's a bit of the pot and the kettle, isn't it? I'm sure there's one or more signings to come. Patience, young man :D .
