Roman has bought the refs!!!
But seriously, despite the fact that the new ref kits are hideous looking, it's certainly weird seeing a ref kit with a sponsor on it....
Being that they share the same sponsorship with Chelsea seems....inappropriate? Maybe that's too strong a word, but it's certainly weird.

certinaly looks silly and its a shame its started a new trend, but if it brings more revenue in for the FA then fairplay

In Germany, they've done a better job of that. The sponsor is DEKRA, an insurance company previously not associated with any club, the patches fit onto the jerseys a lot better and are smaller, and the company actually compares its job settling claims to the ref's job settling btw two teams. It's not a bad link at all, as far as these sponsorship things go.
The worst referee jerseys are the blinding neon yellow Italian ones.

Dekra also evidently used to sponsor Michael Schumacher. Same idea, I guess. He solved Ferrari's problems. :D
The French League officials also have a sponsored uniform.

In the FMF (Mexican League), the refs have their sponsor down both sleeves. Citizen watch company. That's a sponsor that makes some sense.

I almost started this same thread in the Chelsea section. It does seem odd to me and I would have a problem with Vodafone or O2 sponsoring the refs.
The world is very strange. Players and coaches get kicked out of soccer for life for giving money to referees, then an institution (the English FA) signs up a sponsor with links to one team to give money to referees.
Some economics/sociology major should have a field day writing a thesis paper about this.
