Holy ......

Holy ........

What an incredibly tense basketball game, a rematch of the 2002 world championship.

I couldn't tell you what the final score was. I think 80-79. Somewhere around there. But it was a nip-and-tuck back-and-forth all the way with both teams clawing their way back into the game at different times. Down three with about 15 seconds left, Ginobli (Argentina and SA Spurs) drives, gets the foul and the basket. He makes the free throw to tie the game. The Serbs come down, get fouled on a drive with 3.8 seconds. Their big man hits one of two from the line. Argentina goes the whole court in 3.8 seconds. Ginobli banks in an off-balance floater over a defender, released at 0.2 seconds, to win the game. Ginobli's weight puts him on the floor as the ball goes in. The entire team runs out to dogpile him. The Argentine coach goes running around the court in some bizarre way that's half Jim Valvano, half Eddie Munster. Amazing.

Did anyone else watch this game this morning? This goes down immediately on the very, very short list of the best Olympic basketball games.

That was an awesome game...I wish NBC would just take a channel and show the whole men's basketball tournament.

Early results:

Lithuania 78 Angola 73

Angola was up by 13 in the first half. Lithuania shot 50 free throws to Angola's 12...Angolan coach was very upset after the game.

Italy 71 New Zealand 69

Italy was up 17 at halftime but had to hold off a late comeback.

Spain 83 China 58

Spain won easily despite shooting poorly from outside--Gasol was pretty much unstoppable. Yao had a really hard time keeping up--I think the international game with fewer breaks is tougher than the NBA game for him.

Yao very dispirited after the game:

"I feel so disappointed. I lost all my hopes for this team. I didn’t expect to play so bad. We changed our skin but we are the same. Just like the World Championships in Indianapolis two years before."

"I didn’t play well also. I am thinking to retire from National team. Not now, but soon I will. In Indianapolis I was the youngest player. Now I am the older, but still is no hope for us."

Argentina 83 Serbia/Montenegro 82

Fantastic game, Argies were up 12 early thanks to a great first quarter from Ginobili, Serbs fought back to take the lead but missed a couple free throws late and Ginobili was the hero at the end.

I bought the damn package for every minute of the Olympic game back in 1992. The basketball tournament was the best thing..... except those exhibition games involving Dream Team 1.

After the Dream Team's loss, the tournament is now wide-opened. I still think the US will win the Gold, but the top teams now believes in their chance. Puerto Rico probably now dreams of a medal. Argentina probably knows that they might have to meet the US earlier than they wanted.

A 15-0 fourth quarter run did the job for Spain. Gasol had another good game with 26 points and 8 rebounds, while Argentina's other Spurs property, Luis Scola, led his team with 28 points and 9 rebounds.

I'm not expecting much from the Australian Boomers at this Olympic Games. We may win a couple of games, but I'd be surprised if we challenged for a medal. On the other hand, the Opals are gonna kick arse!! :D

Spain beat S&M twice running up to the Olympics. Now, they took care of Argentina. They are a darkhorse.

Upset of Day

New Zealand 90 Serbia-Montenegro 87

New Zealand took the lead with a "disputed call" with 20 seconds left, but I thought the call was correct. Anyway, Serbia was not leading by up to 11 points late in the 4th quarter.

Puerto Rico pulls it out 83-80. Angola, with no players over 6-7, hit 15 threes in the game but couldn't convert a couple chances to tie at the end. Ayuso led Puerto Rico with 17, and Casiano, who had 15, hit a big three to give PR an 81-78 lead with a minute left.
