View Full Version : Question on Köln/Leverkusen

14 Aug 2004, 04:04 AM
Hey,

Is anyone living or has lived in Köln/Leverkusen? There is about a 70% chance I will be working there for an internship and I haven't been back to Germany in about 10 years.

How is Köln? Are the people friendly? Nightlife good?

Can anybody shed some light please, thanks.

I've never been, but I do know that the Kölner Dom is amazing.

I live in New York City but my aunt and uncle live in Koln, they have nothing bad to say about it. I'm gonna go visit them next year so I'd love to know what the nightlife is like there and how the german are girls too.

The people I know in Cologne are friendly.

The nightlife? They have the Altstadt, directly at the Rhine, nice and a lot of pubs and bars.

When you want to have a super nightlife, travel with a train to Duesseldorf.
The way is by train 20 minutes or so, they've more than 100 pubs, bars restaurants open from dusk till down in their Altstadt, and all are always full.
I write 100! possible that are more. And that is on a lenght of ~ one mile.
Best time to go there is at weekand, they've all open (not only 100), get a pub directly at the Rhine, watch the Rhine (how the ships pass by) on a terrace and let the beer come.

Köln is one of my favorite cities in Germany. The Dom (cathedral) is incredible, and the nightlife isn't bad. It's not a huge city though, so don't expect anthing like Berlin, Munich or even Düsseldorf. It's a pretty laid back town, and lots of tourists go there to see the Dom. The Christmas market is also a lot of fun.

Köln is also where Kölsch Bier (http://www.koelsch-net.de/) comes from, which is IMHO one of the best beer styles in the world.

I was in Köln a few years ago for Carnival. Its a liberal city and the nightlife is pretty good. And as just mentioned, the beer is great. Have fun.

Dude, Köln ( Cologne ) is the 4th biggest german city after Berlin, Hamburg and Munich. Köln is waaaay bigger than Duesseldorf. If you mention something like that ( 'Düsseldorf is bigger than Cologne' ....) in Cologne, you probably will get killed for that ;) - the rivalry between Cologne and Duesseldorf is a very, very, very fierce one, not only concerning football...

But vs. Düsseldorf Cologne have only 10% of the nightlife there.
Cause the people from the Ruhrarea (8.000.000-10.000.000 lives there) go to Düsseldorf to celebrate, don't forget all the Japanese workers and tourist who stay in and around Düsseldorf the Airport who bring many business men there from all over the world.
In Düsseldorf is every night party like carnival.

I don't say the Cologne nightlife is bad, but Düsseldorf much, very much bigger, a good weekend in Colognes Altstadt is like 30% as a bad monday in Düsseldorf.
You can't measure that really with other cities in Germany or 'Europe', none of the other cities have such a concetration of free pubs in an area like Düsseldorf.

To the rivalry: A German Chancellor said "The first men who try to get from Cologne to Düsseldorf must be a Neanderthaler and they slayed him".

There's no love lost between Koln and Dusseldorf.
In Koln, I couldn't go 15 minutes without hearing that "Dusseldorf ist das Arschloch der Welt."

If you're an American and you speak even ein bisschen German, you'll do well with the ladies.

They have the Köln ring which is pretty solid night life and particularly popular with college students. People could pick up on my American accent and immediately started speaking english with me despite the fact that I can speak German. That angered me. All in all the people were extremely friendly (except those at the Bahnhoff but they work for DB and that explains that.) Koeln is a very nice city with something for everybody (nice museums, good night life, and good shopping).

I was only in Koeln a week but one of my good friends stayed back to take a month long language course before she started her internship in Pfullendorf. She really liked the city, she always found something to do, and has a bunch of positive night life stories. You'll have a good time.

Move to Düsseldorf.

All I'll say about the Altstadt in Düsseldorf is that they call it "Die längste Theke der Welt" (The World's Longest Bar). The closest thing Cologne has to a party reputation is being well known as one of the gay capitals of Europe.

Thanks everyone for your input.

I will be heading to Leverkusen actually which is not far from Cologne.
I have heard good things about it too from some friends of mine, should be good work experience.

210597: Well at least I won't have to worry about crime, since gay people are happy people :D

If you're in Leverkusen don't forget to watch a soccer game, that should be an experience.

At the end of the soccer season around April/Mai every year, virtually every club in Germany spend a few days in Düßeldorf "celebrating". They come by train and most don't know how they got home again.

Arrived in Cologne and yes I agree there are some very pretty international girls. The Dom is pretty impressive! :D

I work in Leverkusen which is about 20mins away from Cologne so yes I will definately watch a game... pity I am no Bayer fan.
