Well it's been almost a month now since we found out we were getting a team here in Utah. Since then there have been a few tidbits here and there, but I'm getting desperate for news and things to talk about. So here is a fun game that can be enjoyed by children of all ages. You can play it at home; at work; in the car; at the movies... sorry.
Everyone say the day they believe the name will be announced and what the name will be. If you get it right, there will be uh.. bragging rights. Maybe we can all rep you or something. (I told you I was desperate (how many more "It should be utah saintzz har har har" posts can we take?))
My prediction:
August 21
Salt Lake Highlanders

I am also going with 25th.
Name: Highlanders (so I can wear my kilt to matches)
Colors: Green, Red, Black (green/black being primary kit colors, red mostly for logo and 2nd kits)
GM: Hope they have one by then...
Coach: Doubt they have one by that time.

I'm going to say optimistically (for those of you who will be in town to enjoy it...)
August 17th
United Soccer Alliance of the Greater Salt Lake Region of America (U.S.A.G.S.L.R.A.)
Turquoise and chartreuse (sp?)
Okay, okay... not really. Since one of the articles quoted somebody saying, "Highlanders is really a local brand" and also said they were planning to choose something that was not a local brand but something that people would LEARN to like, I'm going to really say...
Alliance SLC
Green the primary color
More staff announced

Aug. 24 - Salt Lake Chupacabras
Cool name. Throw some fear into Chivas.
August 25th - Salt Lake City Swarm
(Damn! I've succumbed!)
I can't see how they will go with anything else but Highlanders. I would like to see purple in the team colors.

That "somebody" was Dean Howes, Chief Executive of Utah Soccer LLC.
Yeah, Highlanders looks like it might be it. Announced on Aug 23. GM and colors too. Coach the following week.

The name & colors will be announced as soon as all the Salt Lake Boom stationery & T Shirts are run through the shredder and whoever thought up that name completes drug rehab.

Salt Lake Highlanders - August 25th
Team management should contact the House of Tartan in Scotland (historians and registrars of clan tartans) and have a custom-made tartan created in team colors. Said tartan could be utilized in the team's branding package (i.e. appear in the logo, piping on the uniform, souvenir products for the supporters' club, etc.)

Have they not announced any dates for this yet?? It's about time to take care of that stuff! When will they do the expansion draft, etc.?

Aug 23.
Salt Lake Alliance SC
Orange, Blue, White
GM: not yet
Coach: not yet
Though I have sneaky suspicion it's gonna be Real Salt Lake, purple/gold (yuck).

Well, the FC Dallas name leaves me unimpressed, but I have to admit that I find their new logo appealing. Here's hoping that Utah's MLS franchise lands a logo that's at least as well-designed.

I didn't want to start a new thread, but on MLSnet they have a poll on the front page that had the top write in choices from the fans and one of them was 'Wasatch Front', what is that?
Out of all the names I think Salt Lake Highlanders has grown on me the most.

The "Wasatch Front" is a geographical region of Utah bordering along the Wasatch mountain range.

I think a day or two after the Olympics ends, Checketts will hold a press conference and announce the choice one of the "traditional" candidates -- either Real Salt Lake or Alliance SL (Hopefully with a "C" for city or a "V" for valley added on to the SL). Alliance SLC has been my choice for a while, and I think the selection will be one of the Alliance names. Then I think the club will say "It's up to our fans to develop a nickname." At which point, the supporters club can dub the team "Highlanders," if they so choose. That gives everyone what they want. The management gets a traditional name that says "football." Internationalist fans get a warm feeling down below by saying "Oh, Metro is playing Alliance tonight." American fans get their non-foreign, non-confusing high school football team-type nickname that won't threaten the children. Opposing fans, Rapids fans in particular, get to go on about kicking the tar out of "The Sheepf---kers." And the supporters group gets to play the bagpipes and wear skirts in public to their hearts' content. And they can name the group "The Immortals" so that everyone knows that soccer fans are really into geeky cult movies. That ought to pack them in.
Anyway, that's what just happened with Dallas, and if there is a general branding strategy, I think that pattern will hold in SLC. And frankly, I think it's the wisest idea.

I completely agree with this guy. Give the team a traditional name, and if we want to be nicknamed the Highlanders, so be it. Much like the Gunners, or the Blues. Arsenal isn't the Arsenal Gunners, or the London Arsenal Gunners. I think Dallas got it right when they went with FC Dallas. I still think we should be Salt Lake City FC. I wouldn't mind Alliance SLC, then again, no matter what the team is called, I am going to call them City anyway, in which case I hope their colors aren't sky blue and white.
if the team gets called "Real" anything, the namers deserve to be clubbed, raped, dynamited or worse for their UNFATHOMABLE stupidity.

Delete the part about the movie and waiting for the Olympics to end and I'd sign my name to this post.

Alliance SLC sounds great! Nickname: Highlanders
Nice thought! I'm gonna wait this one out, no more talking about it for me!
