View Full Version : SLC behind schedule?

According to the following SL Trib article, announcing the name, logo, etc. has been pushed back a week or two.
www.sltrib.com/sports/ci_2392399
The author looks at this as a sign the team is behind schedule for an April opener. I don't see it that way, I just see it as maybe Checketts looking at the polls and reading our threads here on Bigsoccer. Yeh, it mentions our beloved Bigsoccer. If he saw the results and decided to move the announcement back, I take that as maybe he really wanted Real but saw nobody liked it and decided to go with something else. The article says however that Real and Glory are still in the running. I hope not.
Anybody have any doubts about being behind schedule? Or could this actually be a good sign?

Wow, pretty impressive to know that big brother is watching! I really hope that they don't pick Real as the name. Just plain stupid.

The guy that wrote the article is an irresponsible journalist. It was not an editorial column and shouldn not have been open to his conjecture. But, with that being said I really doubt that anyone in the know is concerned that they don't have a name yet. That doesn't prevent the most important things from happening that need to happen to form a team.

Can a SLC resident please explain this: "Highlander really is a local brand," Howes said. "It very much is a part of the community."
How is highlander used in SLC? When I hear it I think of Scotland, but I haven't spent much time in SLC.
Will the mascot be the movie character in the Highlander movies? I hope so.

Maybe the guy that wrote this story will sell information about the team name & colors to the National Enquirer under the table?

If SLC is behind then MLS should bear some responsibility. The expansion announcement took forever.

I guess Toyota does sell alot of those here but I would really call it a "local" brand. SUVs are all too common but not really "a part of the community". What a nut! :D

Here it is from the thread that the team name discussion belongs in...
That one being that Scots didn't have a large part in Utah history. They had quite a large roll in the early LDS church and settleing the state, as most early members came from the British isles. As of the 2000 US census 1 in 10 Utahns claimed Scottish heritage. But, I will spare everyone the extended history of Scots in Utah.
That is my short explanantion as to how it could be considered local. I guess you also have the area in Salt Lake known to locals as Highland (the area by Highland High school). That could be another tie.

So is this an attempt to get the mormon church interested in the team? Do SLC residents consider themselves the Scotland of America like Boston residents and Ireland?
Denver has a region called the Highlands too, should we change our name to the Colorado Highlanders?
Personally, I think SLC Rangers would be cooler.

"Rangers" could be a brilliant choice but for 2 disqualifying reasons...
1. Checkett's background association w/ MSG (ie: NY Rangers) = confusion & possible trademark issues.
2. SLC's unique religious dualism (Mormon vs. non-Mormon)... it would be unwise to associate this city's side with Glasgow's Rangers, which is notorious for intersecular religious division.
"Highlanders", though admittedly a 2nd choice, carries none of this baggage.

Oh no! Utah has some rapids as well! Now we have to change our name to Utah Rapids! We also have fires all the time! And we have lots of crews! And we live on a major faultline! And we have lots of MetroStars I think in the Draper area....

Yes, Colorado should change the name to Highlenders as well, so that the LDS church population in Denver will become more intersted in the team there and by default become Scotland of America.
What in the world does having an area known as highlands have to do with the LDS church? Please explain this line of thinking... I don't understand.

I think that is exactly what happened. They were set to unveil Real Salt Lake but they found that nobody liked it including the soccer purists. I'm not sure that it means they will go with Highlanders, or that Real is out of the running, but I think they are at least rethinking it.

You yourself said:

I wasn't saying Denver should be the Highlanders. I was asking if a Highlanders name in SLC is trying to get the church behind the club because as you said there is a lot of Scotish heritage with setting up the church and state.

How can you possibly speak of the founding of Utah without talking about the LDS Church?
But I think the comment was just that there are a lot of Scottish heritage in the Salt Lake valley, the Church aside.
