I decided to open this thread for everyone who feels like discussing the Brazilian athletes chances, performances and medals won in the upcoming Olympic games of Athens' 04. Because Brazil's men NT didn't qualify for the finals, this thread will sadly be a non-soccer-related, since there's already a thread to discuss the Brazil women team's performance in the games.

Let the games begin.

What are our best chances of winning gold at the olympics? I guess our best shots are with Daiane dos Santos (gymnastics), the men's volleyball team and Robert Scheidt (sailing).

I just hope we don't suffer of the "yellow" syndrom that hit us in Sydney' 2000.

Tonight women's gymnastics starts (I think it starts with team events). So we'll get to see Daiane dos Santos, who is expected to contend for the gold in individual events.

Volleyball won their opening game today (men) and the women did the same yesterday.

Our women's basketball team broke the record for most points scored in the Olympics, against a weak Japanese team - are we contending for a medal or is Japan just that bad?

Right now no sign of any Brazilians on TV here in the US... I wonder if any of the beach volleyball they'll show later is vs. Brazil.

Brazil won France (men) and Denmark (women).

Same medal, same sport. This time his name is Flávio Canto.

Brazil is now the #33 on the medal ranking, with 2 bronzes.

I am interested in seeing how well Juliana Veloso does in diving.
I incessantly watched the Pan American Games last summer when I was in Santos, and she did really well there so I hope she can replicate that success.

From what I follow here are some almost certain Brazilian medals to come or at least very good chances:

- Triple Jump. Jardel Gregorio. Good shot at Gold or Silver. My Prediction : SILVER.

- Mens Beach Volleyball: Gold Favorite MP: GOLD Ricardo/Emmanuel

- Womans Beach Volleyball: Brazil has 2 Teams that could win the Gold. The US is biggest challenge. MP: SILVER Adriana/Shelda

- Mens Indoor Volleyball. Gold Favorite this year but dissapointed in last 2 Olympics. MP: GOLD

- Womans Indoor Volleyball: Medal contender. MP: Bronze

- Womans Basketball: 2 Straight Olympic medals MP: An upset, GOLD.

- Mens 4x100 Track relay: Silver in 2000. MP: Bronze in 2004

- Gymnastics: Floor Individual w/ Daiane dos Santos. Current World Champ. MP: Silver but a GOLD would Rock!!

- Sailing: Good chances with the Always medalist Robert Scheidt MP: GOLD

- Sailing : Star Class: Torben Grael e Marcelo Ferreira Medeled in 96 & 00 MP: GOLD

- Womans Soccer: 4th place in last 2 olympics. This time they WILL medal. MP: Silver.

There are a few other hopefulls I may be forgetting. I realistically think all the above can happen, but one never knows.

Finally a real Brazilian winner at the olympics. Thank you Robert Scheidt!

I saw her last night, she's brilliant. Equal amounts strength and grace, and her music was very cool. The results were unfortunate, but it seems that there have been several questionable judging incidents in both the men's and women's competitions.

I don't blame the judges in her particular case. It's obvious that she was nervous and made mistakes that I doubt she would in any given day. What we have seen since Sidney' 2000 is a lot of Brazilian athletes who are too hyped by our media and are focus of a lot of expectation by the people that end up choking at the crucial moment. It needs a lot of mental preparation for the Brazilian athletes to carry such responsability.

Men's Beach Volleyball took gold earlier - just shown on NBC on tape delay, they may have it this evening too:

http://eventos.esporte.uol.com.br/olimpiadas/medalhistas/ricardoemanuel.jhtm

Hey Ombak welcome back! Hope all is well!

I was a little disappointed in the women's beach volleyball team - they sort of gave up in teh very end when the momentum went to the USA team. But... it was great seeing the USA team's "celebration".

Man will I miss those Canary Island dancers!

Yeah man, it surely made our loss more bearable. I envy Walsh for having the chance of smacking May's hot ass on a regular basis. Life seems so unfair at times. :(

After becoming the symbol of the Brazilian fiasco of Sydney' 2000, Rodringo Pessoa and Baloubet du Ruet find redemption and win the silver medal for Brazil in individual horseback riding(sp).

http://oglobo.globo.com/foto_galeria/olimpiadas2004/040827_pessoa/pessoa01.jpg

Now our only concrete shot at another medal is tomorrow with the men's volleyball team. They'll play the final against Italy.

How things would be if Brazil had won everything we were expected to win and luck had favoured us.

Men's Volleyball : Gold
Women's Volleyball : Gold
Men's beach volleyball: gold
women's beach volleyball: gold
Sailing: 3 golds (Robert Scheidt, Bimba and Grael.
Horse Riding : Gold for Rodrigo pessoa
Judo : 2 golds (Edinanci and...I forgot his name)
Soccer: 2 golds, if the men had classified and women had won
Daiane dos Santos: Gold]

That makes 13 plausable chances of gold, enough to reach 7th place.

F0DA-$E O CORNELIUS HORAN, F0DA-$E O SEGURANÇA EM ATENAS, E F0DA-$E A IRLANDA!!! Athens spent a lot of money on security, yet Vanderlei de Lima, wasn't secure against CORNELIUS HORAN, sadly took bronze. The "sport's highest legal body" says De Lima lost because he was not given the necessary security on the streets of Athens (Reuters) . Well, guess Athens security didn't do a good job there!!!
