The Crew play the Galaxy at Crew Stadium on Thurs. Oct 24 in the finals of the US Open Cup, perhaps the second most important club game in the USA. Take a stab at how many people the game will draw.

It'll be low. and this is a real shame. Year after year we lament that the USSF and partners do next to nothing to advertize this tournement. By rights the National Championship should be the crown jewel of US Soccer.
MLS, too, should push this championship more strongly than it does -- and so should all the leagues. What are we hiding from anyway?

Now that the date is set, the Crew have 6 weeks to promote this match and sell tickets. The Crew fans are desperate for some hardware. So, don't be surprised if attendance exceeds expectations. I personally think a crowd of 16,000 is about right, but I wouldn't be surprised if it tops 20,000.

Plus LA is a good draw here. I expect 15K--16k. Now if the Crew wins the MLS CUP. SRO. Columbus loves winners.

How about a buck-a-brat night or $1 beer night promotion?

My prediction: if the Crew goes out of the MLS Cup playoffs in the first round or the semis, you'll see either one of those two promotions. If they make it to the final, you won't.

I guarantee that buck a beer night is a nonstarter. There is enormous pressure on public events in Ohio to restrict alcohol sales just now. It's the governor's wife's pet project. I'm 50, look my age, and I regularly get carded. That kind of behavior cannot possibly be about enforcing the law, it's just posturing to please the liquor authorities. Discount beer sales would not please those authorities.
That said, it's a Thursday during the school year and even ordinary soccer moms & dads don't know what the Open Cup is. You can count on the Crew doing what they did for the women's game last Sunday (every ticket they sold where the purchaser didn't specifically ask for something else was east side/lower deck, to show up on TV). I hope we see some actual promotion beyond 1/8 page ads in the Dispatch. On the other hand, the closest thing to a Columbus team in a championship final held in Columbus in living memory was the women's basketball team, so if there's any pent-up demand for a big game, those fans have something to go to. If they fill half the seats in the stadium, call that darned good.

The low (4kish) attendence at last year's cup was due to many factors. It was an early game on a Saturday where many of the fans are playing in their OWN teams. There was no advertising, it's an alternate stadium to where the G's regularly play, and it was just ONE week after LA lost to SJ by a golden goal in MLS Cup... some people were rather disillusioned.

Yeah, but Buck-a-Brat night during a visit by Fat Sigi? There might not be any brats left when game time rolls around. :D

If they do the brat thing again, that would be a classic cheer. You just got to get him to hear it!

they have plenty of time on this game... if they don't get over 15k, then it's utterly pathetic
i'm sorry, it's a championship and in a great stadium... the home team has never won a title
how can they not push it??

It's official! The Open Cup Final will be a Buck-a-Brat night along with a Championship Happy Hour starting an hour and a half before the match.
No excuses!

It's getting ridiculos at Blue Jackets games. Every time you by a beer you get carded twice and they don't have beer vendors come through the stands anymore. Same stuff at OSU tailgate events. IT's like they want to bring back prohibition.
As for attendence I'm hoping for the best but thinking only 10,000. Remeber the USSF is responsible for the promotion not the Crew.

why wouldn't the crew jump in on the promoting??
it's a freaking title game at their house, with their team... if they win it would make for great promotional use the following year

I think I live in a fantasy world but I see no reason why the stadium shouldn't be a sell out. The Crew have never won a championship, it is being played in their own stadium, they have had more than a month to sell tickets, and the tournement is named after the teams owner. Why wouldn't this be a huge event for The Crew? To me this is the biggest game they have had since their first game in the new stadium. However, something deep inside me says attendance will be around 10k. I hope I am wrong and hope when I tune into FSW to watch the game I see no empty seats.

I'm still trying to figure out how the Fire could get around 20,000 both times they hosted a final, in spite of the fact that the USSF seems to prohibit the home team from promoting the event.
Good luck getting butts in the seats, Columbus.
