View Full Version : Assessing the first two matches (both results) [R]

Well, not the start we wanted from our two matches in 3 days. The optimists were hoping for 4 points and we ended up with 1. So what are the problems areas and where are we OK (if any places... yes, there are some)? I'll just deal with both matches, because similar problems and strengths popped up in both matches.

Pace - Easy, we're really struggling for it. Watford match really showed that, two goals allowed because we have no speed in defence. We HAVE TO get big Dan Sh!ttu back into the team. We're just really unlucky that his long term injury is getting in the way. That said, we could have tried to get someone in over the summer that could fill in - judging the first two matches, George Santos is not that man. But, I'm willing to give him more of a chance to adapt to his new team.

Central Defence - Well, God love him, Olly bunged that up tonight. Starting Santos and Gnohere in the back tonight was an obvious mistake form the start. A mistake that was realised by the players during the first half, when Rose essentially replaced Santos in defence. That left Santos running around in no man's land, doing next to nothing (see second goal). Olly got it wrong from the start and admitted as much at halftime by putting Furlong and Bean on to make amends for the central defence mistake. Gnohere and Santos are our cover centrebacks. Rose MUST play in central defence, preferably with big Dan (when he comes back). Till then I would play Rose and Santos, and bite nails.

Central Midfield - Another trouble spot that Olly has made worse tonight, but I'm confident that he'll get the right pair in there (if there is one). Again we're hurt by injury with our experienced 1st div player out (Birch). Marcus Bean was dropped tonight because he had a poor match v Rotherham (and he did). But, the problem there is that Marcus does not lose matches for us, even if he doesn't win them. The Rose/Santos debacle was much more tragic for us that playing Marcus. It wasn't just down to picking two worse players for the team in Rosey and Santos, but the confusion as to whom was playing where showed that Olly made the wrong choice. Richard Johnson hasn't shown in the first two matches that he can thrive in this division either but, like Bean, he can get better.

Gallen/Rowlands - both players rely on development and possession to thrive, and we are not really doing that at the moment. Hence, they're a bit out of it. Plus, if I'm being critical of my favourite R (Rowlands), I think he's lacking a bit of confidence in this division. Some of his passes are a bit short and he's not as willing to take players on. I saw this in his play for Ireland this summer, and I think its just down to him not used to this level of competition. I think he's good enough though, and will adapt as the season continues.

Chris Day - Sure he's not as good as Camp, but I think he's started alright. Has made some good saves, but definitely needs to concentrate on his decision making and catches. Not bad though, and needs to get his confidence up and become the strong bit of our defence, as he was in '02-'03.

Now some real positives. Marcus Bignot has been terrific so far, and he was the player I was least sure of in the starting 11. Good pace, great intensity and skillful play on the ball. Great stuff - he's really cemented his place. Gino's been good as well.

Paul Furlong - must play! I thought Olly was giving him a rest after he played 90 minuted in 100 degree heat, which would have been fair enought really. Holloway realised that Furs has to be on the pitch at halftime though, and he was straight on with Bean. Some great touches at the beginning of the half when we threatened to get back into the match. He's got to be our target forward, even if it means we change formation.

Speaking of formation - I think this might be our best 11 (when healthy) and in a more daring formation...

----------Day-----------
----------Rose----------
Bignot--Sh!ttu--Padula
------- Bircham--------
Rowlands--------Cook
--------Gallen----------
----Furlong---Thorpe--

It'll never happen, but a guy can dream. Thanks for reading this vent, and I'll be interested to see what the guys who watched on Setanta tonight think.

Come on you R's

first off, can i just say what a pleasure it could have been to watch the Rs absolutely stone cold sober (I was at the game) and they they go and balls it up by playing like that.

A few things to pick up on from what Kev said, pace is going to be the killer, and Forbes really must partner Rose at the back rather than Santos in my opinion. I am not saying Santos isn't any good as I have only seen him in patches so far but Forbes and Rose know each others games which Gnohere and Santos clearly didn't last night.

Chris Day needs to learn to kick it in the right place, during the second half, Furs would holler for the ball, Day would boot it up field and it would land on the forehead of the chap standing behind Thorpe.

Gallen - either play him up front or take him off, he moved to right wing then left wing and had no impact in either position.

My ideal team for saturday - when everyone is fit is too difficult to pick....

Day

Biggie - Forbes - Rose - Padula

Ainsworth - Bean - Jonno - McLeod

Furs - Gallen

No Rowlands I hear you shout, well he hasn't had a great preseason or opening 2 games and looks like he's on tranquilisers so its the bench for him.

Thorpe to come on after 60 minutes not 82 please should the need arrise. I'd love to play Thorpe, Gallen and Furs but I can't see it happening

Good posts, Kevin and Lloydy. Thank you both for sharing your opinions.

Here are a few of my own based on last nights' game and Rotherham via commentary (I've only seen short highlights as the extended highlights only download about 30-seconds worth for me).

As for the changes, Ainsworth and Furlong are 35 and 31 and both have a history of injuries. Would I have liked them both to start? Yeah, but Olly knows he has to play 46 games -- with guys like McLeod and Thorpe on the bench, we should be able to let one or both of these guys sit out a game without it blowing up in our face. Frankly, I didn't think either of their replacements played that poorly -- we simply weren't getting much out of Rowlands and Gallen.

The other change (Santos in, Rose to midfield) was a mess -- I guess he really thought a) Bean played that poorly against Rotherham and b) Santos was ready to fit in after just a week. I don't know if either of those was true. Until Big Dan gets back, it looks like we should have Rose pairing with Santos/Forbes/Gnohere. If Forbes isn't going to play, let's hope Santos is good enough, once he gets settled in, to unseat Gnohere.

A few other random thoughts:

The Midfield:

It seems both Gallen and Rowlands are having a hard time getting off the mark, although Gallen's effectiveness in midfield is a question mark anyway. I'd guess it's partly that they aren't playing well, but partly that we seem to have been able to do very little in cental midfield -- as Kevin said, we're not playing a game that favors their skills. I'm not sure Birch's return is "the answer" but it'll have to be an improvement. On Saturday, might we be better off with Rowlands in the middle along with Johnson/Bean and starting McLeod and Ainsworth on the wings?

Johnson, when I even noticed him yesterday, was turning the ball over. Beanie may have been a bit better, but didn't impress much. I wouldn't start them in tandem on Saturday.

The Defense:

While the Santos/Gnohere pairing fared poorly last night, I didn't think we improved much we switched to Rose/Gnohere, even after Bean came in for Santos. We were simply weak in the center of the pitch (keeper, defense, and midfield) -- men left unmarked, too little pressing of the ball, inability to keep the ball once we won it or to pick out teammates in dangerous spots.

Holloway seemed to think that the defense played too deep once Day screwed up on the first goal. There may be something to that -- with the limited skills of the guys in central defense, we don't want to play huge chunks of the game deep in our territory.

Is Forbes not playing for footballing reasons? Or because, given the legal situation (and potential fan reaction), he's on the squad simply for last-ditch cover?

If so, I'd give Santos a chance to get acclimated and to beat out Gnohere. On Saturday, I'd start Rose and either Santos or Forbes, I think.

As for the outside backs, Bignot was pretty impressive and my MOTM last night. Gino seemed to be fair enough in defense, but his overlaps weren't as dangerous as Biggie's and his free kicks/corners were pretty poor. This was a complaint of the commentators on Saturday as well. I'd stick with him for awhile on set pieces, because we've seen him do some beautiful things with free kicks, but it's time for Gino to show, both in defense and on the offensive end, that he's up to this level.

The Forwards:

Gallen was less than impressive. Thorpe had his problems, but seemed more of a danger than Gallen. While we didn't get many more chances after Furlong was inserted than before, he seemed to help us possess the ball on their end of the field a bit more. We've got four good forwards (when Cureton returns), so Olly's got to pick the best pairing and/or who is on form. That being said, I think I'd go with this lineup at Sunderland:

----------Day-----------
Bignot-S/F*-Rose-Padula
--------Johnson^---------
Ainsworth-Rowlands-McLeod
----Furlong----Thorpe-----

*Depending on how Santos does in practice and whether Olly is keeping Forbes out for non-football reasons, I'd choose between them
^I'd lean toward Johnson, going into a place like the Stadium of Light, due to his experience at this level, but if Beanie is looking much the best in training, I'd give him the start

Also, given that we're going on the road against a strong side, maybe the more attack-minded midfield I listed above isn't the way to go. Instead, I guess I'd go with:

-----------Day-----------
Bignot--S/F*--Rose--Padula
Ainsworth-Bean-Johnson-Rowlands
----Furlong----Gallen-----

...with Cook and McLeod ready to go if the midfield sputters. If Thorpe and Cureton can't go, is McLeod the likely person to get drafted in to play forward if something happens to Furs or Gallen (or we drop into a 4-5-1)?

New poster here, good to see the great name of QPR spreading across the pond.

Against Sunderland I think it's important we keep it tight, a draw would be a good result imo even last season our away form let us down and getting something at the Stadium of Light would give the squad a huge psychological lift.

I'd go with;

Day
Bignott Rose Gnohere Padula
Ainsworth Bean Gallen Johnson Mcleod/Cook
Furlong

I'd like Forbes to play, his pace is really missed especially in this division but I can't see Olly picking him, with all his off field problems

I know it's controversial but Rowlands hasn't been himself this season or in pre-season, Ainsworth and either Cook/Mcleod will give us a bit more pace down the flanks and we will need Bean and Jonno to give us more steel in the middle. Gallen is the perfect man to link Furlong with the midfield.

Everyone seems to be writing us off for this game but I think we could nick a point.

How long till we get big Dan back in the defense? Any projected date for his return?

New poster here, good to see the great name of QPR spreading across the pond.Welcome to the QPR board on Big Soccer. Thanks for your thoughts on our current squad and I hope you post here regularly this year! How long till we get big Dan back in the defense? Any projected date for his return? On July 27, before the Bristol Rovers match, the official site said (http://www.qpr.premiumtv.co.uk/page/NewsDetail/0,,10373~544906,00.html) they were hopeful he'd return to full training in two weeks time. That's be about now. The injury reports since then have just said that he (and Culkin) are "making good progress." I seem to remember that they'd moved his target date up to September sometime, but couldn't find the link.

The injury was in late January and this early July piece (http://www.qpr.premiumtv.co.uk/page/NewsDetail/0,,10373~539360,00.html) says he "looks set to return well before the initial nine month prognosis." (which would, presumably, be in late October).

How long till we get big Dan back in the defense? Any projected date for his return? Some good news on the Sh!ttu front: according to the official site (http://www.qpr.premiumtv.co.uk/page/NewsDetail/0,,10373~553533,00.html) Big Dan is slated to play 45 minutes for the reserves today against Colchester. Santos, McLeod, and Cureton will also start in an "otherwise young side that includes two trialists." Jake Cole and Lewis Hamilton seem to be the only other two with squad numbers set to start. Also, Cook and Forbes are set to play the second 45.

Tim Breaker says Dan will need "a couple more reserve games yet before he's ready for the first team."

Our lineup:
Rangers: Cole, Hamilton, Murphy, Sh!ttu, Fletcher, trialist, Santos, trialist, McLeod, Barnett, Cureton
subs: Forbes, Cook, Townsend, Farr, BaileyThe kick-off is set for 9 a.m. eastern, so we should get a report this afternoon of how it went for Dan.
