Interesting. I would've figured Adidas would be the frontrunner. Then again, BVB is now outfitted by Nike. Also, why aren't there more German teams outfitted by Puma?

Theres a Hertha BSC Berlin Nike shop now in Berlin that's now the biggest fanshop in Germany; looks like Nike is beating Adidas.

I am not a Nike fan but they obviously have the strength of the the American sportsmarket, now include Brazil and several other countries. They can probably outbid any competition. It is nice to see Puma making a comeback. Doesn't Italy NT use Puma now?

My understanding is that Adidas has purposefully limited the number of teams it supplies. It has consciously chosen a few teams as its standardbearers, Bayern being the biggest, obviously, but Schalke and Leverkusen fit into this strategy, as well. I don't know if Adidas has some sort of special tie to Bavaria, but the other teams Adidas sponsors are non-descript Bavarian clubs (Nuremberg's past notwithstanding).

Puma's lack of involvement really surprises me, too. They lost Wolfsburg to Nike for this season, leaving Stuttgart as its only BL team (Stuttgart, by the way, went to Puma last year or the year before after being a long-time Adidas team). You'd think they'd have a bigger involvement in what is basically their own backyard.

The founder of Adidas Adi Dassler is (like his brother who later founded Puma) from Herzogenaurach, which lies at the outskirts of Nuremburg. Adidas' HQ is, AFAIK, still in Herzogenaurach (like Puma's).

Puma underwent a renaissance in the past couple of years. The new CEO that stepped up in 1993 saved Puma from getting into serious trouble by setting up the whole company in a new way. Today their main business isn't functional sports wear but something like lifestyle wear which seems very profitable. But the are still by far not as big as Nike and Adidas. They sign teams and players that have something extraordinaire like the "wild bunch" of VfB Stuttgart or the Jamaican bobsleigh team.

Btw, tomorrow it's crunch time! Time for Gerets to deliver 3 points to Westfalenstadion. ;-)

It would have been cool if we were outfitted with Puma, jo. But then again, we wouldn've gotten the Nike corners.

Great story about the family feud in Uli Hesse-Lichtenberger's "Tor"

Thanks (and to AlexK, too). I knew the basic story of Adidas (and Puma, for that matter), but did not know where the company started or where its HQ is. Certainly helps explain its Bavarian focus.

Good luck tomorrow. It should be a good game, since it is not InterToto (if that were the case, they should just cancel the game). I'm predicting a lot of goals.

Keith's Response: I used to live not more than a ten-minute drive from the Adidas complex in "Herzo". I lived right down the road in Erlangen. Heard the stories from many who claimed to have worked for both companies.

AFAIK, that means business as usual.

Dortmund beats Wolfsburg in the Westfalenstadion.
