This leads me to believe that there will be a major news conference soon, and there will be much rejoicing in Manchester and Chelsea.

Argentina came back to beat the US 2-1 in an extra-time thriller Friday and set up a World Youth Championship semifinal with Brazil, which trounced Japan 5-1.

Argentina's Javier Mascherano saved the defending champion from an embarrassing defeat, scoring with a header in the fourth minute of injury time to take the match to extra time, after Bobby Convey had given the lead to the Americans in the 59th minute.

"This was a very intense match. When I go back to Argentina, I will have my heart checked," Argentina coach Hugo Tocalli said.

Captain Fernando Cavenaghi scored the golden goal for Argentina in the 98th minute, slotting home a penalty after Franco Cangele was taken down by Drew Moor in the penalty area.

Mascherano is a solid player with a lot of potential. He can be a bit reckless though. To some extent he reminds of a hybrid of both Xavi Alonso and Genero Gattuso.

Speaking of Alonso, I wonder if Wenger has contacted Real Sociedad about his availability? He could be acquired for about 10 million, especially given that Sociedad's purse strings are tight at the moment.

I'm all for going after Xavi. He's much more like-for-like talking about a replacement for Vieira. Isn't Maniche a much more flair player? Xavi's got more engine and steel, but plenty of skill. I wouldn't mind seeing Maniche in an Arsenal jersey, but I'd rather see a more experienced general or ballwinner come in right away. I can't see Gilberto doing the job himself, paired with Edu or Maniche.

Apparently Real Sociedad recently turned down a 13 million pound offer from Real Madrid. Santini has declared his interest in the midfielder and is inclined to better the offer from RM. If Arsenal sells PV4 for 23.X million then a bidding war could begin with Spurs.

I have my reservations about Nuno Maniche. I had not even heard of him prior to Porto's run in the Champions League. I wonder how he would fit in?

For those who haven't seen Mascherano play ... the kid is due to be a HUGE player for any team he plays for.

The best description for him would be Redondo ... the Argentine at Real for many years.

He is only 20 ... but his "reading" of the field ... timing and passing skills would surprise anyone. He is the #5 for Argentina for many years to come.

For US$12 million it is a steal. And would give Boca a hand. ;)

Mascherano would be fine by me, but I would rather have Xabi Alonso. He could probably help bring in Cesc as his partner.

Would Mascherano be able to get a Work Permit? I'm thinking it would be difficult at this stage.

Oh, I'm sure they could find an Uncle or 3rd cousin who once was Spanish or Portugese. Maybe even German, who knows.

I've seen Mascherano play a few times now (for Argentina), and he has always impressed me. He's always there to provide an immediate outlet for the defense. Once he gets the ball, he can turn, dribble out of danger, and/or start a dangerous attack with a great pass. He also seems to always be in the right place to make a good tackle, and I haven't seen him get beat very often. All this at 20.

Trust me, if you get Mascherano, consider yourself very lucky. This kid is going to be around for years, and he'll be one of the top defensive midfielders when he reaches his potential. Even now, only a handful are better. In Argentina's game against Colombia (I think) in the Copa America, Mascherano showed his skill very well. Watch that game, and you'll get an idea of what he can do.
