He passed away tonight at the age of 79. Murph retired after last season and called Mets games for the past 42 years, ever since the team's inception. He was inducted into the Hall of Fame in 1994.

Murph started his career as a Red Sox broadcaster in 1954 before calling Orioles games in 1960. He joined Lindsay Nelson and Ralph Kiner as the trio, forming a Hall of Fame broadcast team.

I'll always love Bob Murphy and his "happy recaps". I'll miss the days when he'd describe the clouds and talk about what a great day it is for a baseball game. It makes the Ralph Kiner/Bob Murphy bobblehead dolls I got as a promotion even sweeter. We'll miss you Murph. Hope you're having a happy recap right now.

Nice article in the New York Times about him. I love this quote the best:

Last September, for Murphy's finale, the Mets reunited him on television with Kiner. At one point, Kiner said to Murphy, "Remember when you said, 'Bob Aspromonte's parents are here, and they're high and outside?' ''

He was an absolute legend, and on air he came across as the kindest and best of his craft. In an age where the forced uniqueness of jack@sses like Michael Kay dominate the airwaves, even Yankee fans can revere who Murph was, how he went about his job and what he brought to every game.

Sad day for baseball.
