Real Madrid have agreed a fee with Arsenal for the signature of the London club's French international midfielder Patrick Vieira, according to a radio report in Spain on Tuesday evening.

Cadena SER radio station reported that Real Madrid president Florentino Perez and Arsenal vice-president David Dein have agreed a 35 million euro (£23.1million) fee for the French international who is expected to sign a four- or five-year deal if the transfer goes through.

However, the report said that Arsenal had asked for a few days to line up a replacement - thought to be Porto midfielder Maniche.

Prisa, the media group that owns Diario AS and Cadena SER, has an investment in Real Madrid TV and is thought to be close to the Bernabeu outfit.

Best of luck to Paddy. It was a wonderful 8 year run.

Can't imagine how Wenger will replace the irreplaceable, but if anybody can do it he can.

I still won't believe any of this until I see Patrick put on the white shirt.

What makes you think Spanish radio is any more reliable than La Marca or the tabloids?

Ah, but I've been back for a week already. I found a job last month without firewall nazis.

I suspect that I'll be able to really enjoy the Champions League again this year.

Freddie, Gilberto, Edu & Pires in the midfield? I don't know if this will get it done. Flamini and RVP haven't proved themselves. If this is indeed the case I think Arsenal need another presence in the Midfield. The problem is there is only one Patty Viera. I'm absolutley dumbstruck on anyone who could fill the void.

If this is all true, what are the odds we'll be forced to up pay well over the odds in order to get a quick "replacement", such as Maniche who probably won't be half as good and take months to settle in !

WHY DO YOU THINK VIERA IS IRREPLACEABLE??????

Arsenal is a team, not an individual. It is a big blow as it is the skipper that is leaving. This may be a good thing for Aresenal. If the Captain of the ship has no loyalty they should get rid of him ASAP.

Actually Makale is a better D-mid than Viera. Another member of the team can now step up and shine.

Bye Bye Viera, the Gunners will prosper without you.

there is no replacement....

Could not have said it any better. This is a huge loss, no doubt. But if PV04 wants to leave, good riddance. Way to be the captain. Have phun being just another cog in the matrix, Patrick.

By the way, Arsenal will STILL win the Champions League this season and will beat Real Madrid to boot, to boot.

I am sad he's going, but if we get a decent fee for him then AW might be able to pull out a few players from his magic hat. I'm not sure that we should be looking for a direct replacement, because it isn't going to happen- the hole is too big and time is too short for anyone to fill. Instead, if we work as a team to pressure more, work harder all over the park, and take care of the ball, we can reduce the impact of Paddy's departure. Then, if we spend the money right, we might have an unbelievably deep and talented squad in a year or two. (Any guesses as to who AW might have his eye on?)

Oh.my.god, I wish that was the scenario.

Just imagine he leaves us to pursue his dream of winning the CL with Madrid.

We meet Real in the final, not only do we beat them, Vieira's Arsenal replacement wins man of the match...

And just to see his face when Bergkamp lifts the trophy would be priceless..

Muhaha..*cough* well, it could happen.. :o

I agree also. As of 5pm no bid had been received by Arsenal, I completly trust 100% the person who told me that.

Spanish Radio is about as reliable as Spanish Tabloids, but seeing as Friday is the last day for any of this to happen, I guess we should not be surprised.

I saw the look in Arsene's eyes when he was first asked about a transfer of Patrick to Real, and that look seemed to say "... you have got to be fscking kidding you stupid journalist prick".

Mind you, AW is usually stone faced, so this bit of insight should only tell me not to play cards against the fellow. Seeing as Arsenal are spending big big big bucks on the new stadium, I can see them selling a "at their peak" player like Vieira when a team lik RM is soooo desperate to sign ___someone___ to keep Beckham on the bench :p
