Might be slightly more relaxing when your being driven over in great big dirty Merc or something. Obviously on the way back it was broken up by a trip to Amsterdam too.

Maybe a train? I never understood why DB wouldn't or couldn't fly, but someone at Ginger's, a fellow Gunner, told me about his TERRIFYING flight that changed his mind about air travel.

It started during the world cup in 1994 I think. A Dutch journalist pretended to be a terrorist for a laugh (and was arrested for it), scared everybody quite a bit not just Bergkamp.

Really? Do you have a link to that story? I'm not being smart, I've just never heard that before. I had heard (as you mentioned) that Bergkamp's fear first arose during the 94WC but I just thought it was a particularly bumpy ride in between Orlando and Dallas or something like that.

Any match that Dennis goes to that the rest of the squad fly to (remember they fly anywhere north of Birmingham....) he gets driven in either a Range Rover Vogue or an Audi A4 by his wife's father. He then meets up with the players at the hotel before the game. To Austria it was the Range Rover, and yes was broken up by a trip to Amsterdam so wasn't too bad. Oh and by the way, the rumour is that he hasn't come back yet, so could well play in Belguim tomorrow against Beveren......

I'll try to find a link. I know for a fact that it's true regardless though.

That's cool. As I said...I'm not trying to be Torquemada. I've just never seen the actual story but have always heard several different versions.

This website reckons he just decided not to fly any more one day

http://bergkamp10.cjb.net/

There's quotes (in the biography pre 1996 bit):
...Dennis took a decision to never fly again. "A lot of people think that I've never flown but that's not true. I have flown before and just suddenly decided not to do it again. Nothing happened to cause me to make that decision. I had just come to realise that flying was affecting me a lot and affecting my game. In the days leading up to the game I was worrying about the flight and then during the game I would be worrying about the flight back. That was no good for me or the team. To me there is no problem. In deciding not to fly again I've made a solution to a problem. I felt free again after I'd made that decision and I believe it's not a coincidence that I've played the best football of my career at Arsenal, since I made that decision. Okay, so sometimes I miss a few games but then I could be missing games through suspension or injury." Dennis says. Now he can play matches in foreign countries only if they can be reached by car, train or boat. That's why one of his nicknames is "The Non-Flying Dutchman".

I obviously don't know how reliable this information is.

in one of my old four four two magazines they interviewed him and he basically said the same thing how worrying about the flight to and from was affecting his game.

That say's it all, he's afraid of planes.
