Dortmund Strong; Rosicky Hits Out
Finally a strong match from Tomas Rosicky! The small Czech was Man of the Match in Dortmund's 2-1 victory over Dutch club Vitesse Arnheim. And we know why......
"Our new trainer has 100 percent confidence in me as a playmaker. Last season I had to restrain myself much more" Rosicky said in an apparent slap at former Dortmund trainer Matthias Sammer.
Sammer made Rosicky play on the outside frequently.
Dortmund's goals came on a Sunday Oliseh free-kick in the 6th minute and from Danish international Niclas Jensen in the 47th minute.
www.Borussia-Dortmund.com says that Wolfgang Stark will be the referee of the BVB-VfL Wolfsburg 2004/2005 Bundesliga opening match for us this coming Saturday.

A strong Rosicky is the key to sooo many things this coming season. Hopefully we will see him perform like 2-3 years ago.

Tomas can be the difference between UEFA Cup and Champions League play.

There s no doubt about it, if Rosicky is on form, Dortmund will be very strong contenders for a top three spot at the end of the season.

Rosicky could also be the difference between UEFA Cup football and mid-table mediocrity. Don't assume BVB has the firepower to make an "automatic" UEFA Cup run.
A couple of injuries outside of Rosicky would kill this team. We have almost zero depth and our defense, in a word, SUCKS.
We've had defensive problems since our title season and management has continued to ignore those problems while throwing away too much money on players like Evanilson and Amoroso.
BVB is strongest in midfield, has a solid keeper, has erratic strikers and a completely crappy defense without Woerns and C. Metzelder. With Woerns and CMetz, it's still pretty close to crap due to their lack of "striker-type" speed.
What ticks me off is that while it is CLEAR this team's greatest need is speed in central defense and it has been our greatest need for a couple of years, what does BVB management want to do?
BRING IN ANOTHER FREAKIN' MIDFIELDER!!!
Although that midfielder is Mark van Bommel, I'd much rather have help in central defense. I think Sunday Oliseh, Florian Kringe and Sebastian Kehl can hold down defensive midfield.
We can't do much about the striker position since the idiots in BVB management sold their two best striker prospects (Conor Casey & Emmanuel Krontiris) for a GRAND TOTAL of 600,000 Euros!!! The major problem I have with Koller and Ewerthon is the fact that both WASTE ENTIRELY TOO MANY CHANCES!
Some are impressed that both scored 16 goals last season. I am not. If they'd converted not HALF of the solid goal chances they managed to throw away last season, both strikers would have had 25 goals or more.
BVB has had the same two major problems in the past few seasons and I don't see where either problem has been addressed. I repeat.
1) We didn't get any help for the slow defenders we have. And we are starting this season with BELOW AVERAGE talent in central defense! (Ahmed Madouni and Andre Bergdolmo)
2) We waste too many chances. What did BVB do? Sold their two best young strikers for next to nothing.
We will need extrordinary luck in the injury department and a few guys playing over their heads for the entire season to have a chance at making the UEFA Cup, much less the Champions' League. Luck much like Bremen had this past season.
We'll also need for a few other clubs to have some difficulties. Clubs such as Bremen, Stuttgart, Leverkusen and Schalke. I think Stuttgart and Leverkusen will have some difficulties, but I think Bremen and Schalke are going to be hard to beat.
Wow. I didn't mean to get off on a tangent like that. Despite my "slightly pessimistic" view, I do have hopes for the BVB team this season.
I just know we'll need lots of fire and lots of luck.......

Thanks for the breakdown! I have to say a healthy Wörns is essential for the success of our tawdry defensive core, even if, admittedly, it does little for our overall defensive speed. Otherwise, I totally agree that our defense could really suck.

Keith's Response: Worns is simply the most solid defender we have. Slow, but the anchor of our defense and the most consistent player on the team. Usually, when he's beaten, speed is the difference and not positioning or smarts. If he had a speedy guy in the middle along with him, I'd be more confident, but for right now, I think the lack of talent in defense is going to kill us.
