from SoccerAmerica:
"[Memo Gonzalez] is a perfect example of the kind of player we're looking for. [Chivas USA] will be able to field three Mexicans of any age, that's were Ramon Ramirez and Paco Palencia fit in, and we have the right to have six players 22 years or younger, who will arrive from Mexico, but we'll need 10 or 12 players who are American citizens or Latinos with residency in the United States."
-- Ivar Sisniega, executive president of Chivas of Guadalajara, on the roster of Chivas USA, which on Monday will officially be announcing its entry into MLS for the 2005 season. Memo Gonzalez, 18, a former U.S. U-17 star of Mexican descent, is currently with the Los Angeles Galaxy, for which he has seen 60 minutes of action this season. (La Opinion)
I was hoping they would find new, undiscovered talent as opposed to signing Hispanic players from other teams. Memo speaks Spanish, right?

Obviously, Antonio "Chivas" Martinez has to be a candidate.

It seems the 3 first players (or at least the Mexican nationals as opposed to Mexican - Americans) on "Chivas USA" will be...

Fransisco Palencia (31)

Ramon Ramirez (34)

Martin Zuniga (34)

probably a lot knew of the first two guys, but maybe not so many have heard of Martin Zuniga.

He's a keeper who spent about half his career as a starter and half as a back-up. He was good sometimes but he's obviously old now.

Maybe Vergara can not only have only latinos on this team but it can also be the pentioners and retirees team. lol :D

Do you have a source on this? I've admittedly never heard of Zuniga, but if Vergara's planning on using a senior international slot on an old player at the league's best position, when he's probably going to have trouble finding field players to fit his standards, I've got some serious doubts about this team's ability to compete in a league that can't be dominated by near-retirement players from more established leagues.

This year, the only foreign veterans the Wizards have fielded are Vuk Rasovic (45 minutes) and Alex Zotinca (1083). There's hardly a more homegrown team in the league, and there certainly hasn't been a more successful one this season.

As a Burn fan, I feel the biggest mistake we ever made was trading Chivas Martinez. In the right system, the guy is awesome, especially making long runs down the left flank.

I really hope he comes back to the MLS.

Does anyone know the typical salaries in Mexico? Is the MLS salary cap going to be such a problem that all we will see on Chivas USA are retreads who are way past their prime?

Developmental and discovery players are fine, but it would be great for Chivas USA to field at least a few real stars who are not past their prime, but that's probably wishful thinking.

I saw this on Univision this morning - apparently Chivas is pretty proud of their first player signing. I think he's a little thin, but that's just me...

The team physio staff is shaping up nicely, though.

I don't know if its true but Martin Zuniga is a 34 yr. old Keeper who was part of a bad Veracruz team and was a player for Chivas.

Senior Internationals:
Igor Simutenkov: missed first 20 games, still not match fit
Vuk Rasovic: 45 minutes, his acquisition was set in motion before Shavar Thomas turned into the stud that he is. I don't know if Vuk even dresses for games
Diego Walsh: Now appearing on the sides of milk cartons in the KC area.

Transitional Internationals:
Shavar Thomas: Will be an SI next season.
Khari Stephenson: Drafted by Chicago last January, is a long-term project or an expansion pick

Zotinca is a green card holder.

The Wizards do pretty much get it done with Americans.

-----
And just to keep it on topic.....

I don't think Nick Garcia knows Spanish.

Diego Gutierrez was lost to Chicago in the last expansion draft, but I don't think KC will leave him unprotected this time.

I have heard Chivas USA begins looking at non-ADGuadalajara-rostered players today in Guadalajara.
