Not to disparage any member of the Blitzz' RAF (Radical Attitude Fans) in any way, but we're going to need a much better name for the new MLS team. Any suggestions?

Although I don't have any concrete suggestions, I think the fan club name should follow a couple basic guidelines:

(a) Related to the team name (once that is announced) if there is a logical choice. There may not be, so let's think up other ideas first.

(b) Not an in-joke. That means nothing to do with polygamy or the lack of beer in Rice Eccles Stadium. This also means nothing to do with the LDS church or Utah subculture. (The Jell-O Giants is out.)

(c) Nothing too obscure

(d) Something that sounds nice to say and has a good sound to it.

Any other suggestions for guidelines? And guidelines aside, any ideas? Once we get a few ideas, we can post a poll for people to voice their opinions on the various options. Not to say the members of the actual supporters club have to give a darn what people think, but it's still a nice thought.

Yeah, that's still not funny.

I think the name will be decided at the meetings, but for conversation's sake... I think it needs a sort of solid, strong name. Empire Supporters Club is a good example of that. It sounds big and solid. That's all.

Hey, here's a novel idea. You wait until the team is named before you go name the club supporting them! How's that suit ya?

Yes, isn't that what a discussion board is for? Discussing things? You can't think that Dave or Dan Checketts (or other interested parties) are reading this board every day saying, "Yeah, yeah... I like Utah Mountain Men better than Salt Lake Pioneers... Good thing they recommended that!"

I mean, at least here the people who make the decision are going to be reading people's ideas. :o

True we could discuss it (or "debate" as we kindly call it here at BS) but we really need to see what the team name is before we really have any fodder to use.

Oh and continuing the joke names : CHECKERS

It sure is, which is why I said :

but for conversation's sake...

and then DISCUSSED.

Okay, I didn't realize the "Earthquakes" were formerly called the "Clash." That makes the Casbah name more understandable. That being said, I guess most of the names are correlated to the team names. I look forward to the meeting where we can discuss the new supporter's club name... If I miss out on that meeting, too, I'm gonna be ticked off.

In the meantime...

Any other ideas? My dad is both a soccer fan and language expert--he does work on the side for a company that names all sorts of commercial products. I think he helped come up with the name "Verizon" and has helped name a couple cars... I'll ask him for some good suggestions. :)

There was a link in another thread about naming the team, and it made it clear that we're not likely to get a "cutesy" name for the team. More likely it will be something simple and concise like "Salt Lake Soccer Club" that can build up a nickname over time, like Arsenal did.

So if that's the case, where will our inspiration for a supporter's club name come from? Here's at least one bad idea:

The Whistling Brigade: This is taken from the "Whistling and Whittling Brigade" in LDS (that means Mormon...) church history. After the city of Nauvoo, IL lost it's charter and weren't allowed any official troops to protect themselves, they formed this "brigage" as an informal way to keep out looters. They never actually got violent, just followed strangers around in big groups whistling and carving wood, intimidating them until they left town. Isn't that essentially what the supporter's club wants to do?

Okay, I SAID it was a bad idea. Sheesh.

When it comes to pass that the team is named Salt Lake City Swarm SC, Salt Lake Swarm SC or Utah Swarm SC ;) , the supporters' club should select one of the following for their name:

The Killer Bees (though this could be a great name for a reserve side, as well... Killer Bs)

The Hive

I wish I could remember where I had read it, but there was a statement by Dave Checketts saying that the team name would have nothing to do with bee's or behives etc. If anyone can halp me find it and post it for our friend Brian that would be great...
