View Full Version : A Radical Idea

Right now we've got cap room. As near as I can tell, we've probably got $200K in cap space. Here's a radical idea: trade some of it for a draft pick.

The going rate is cap space for a first round pick (what Dallas got from Chicago and from us). Furthermore, that isn't a first round pick for a lot of space--I thought the Fire only got about $60K for their first round pick and we got about $90K (though I could be wrong).

Why do this?

Well, the talk about the expansion draft got me thinking about our roster. I think Nowak went into the season willing to give people a trial--to see if they could cut it. I think his hands were also tied--we had so many cap commitments (and then injuries) he really couldn't add people.

I actually think we may be in a situation where going into the expansion draft we will not expose anyone to the draft that the team is interested in keeping. In otherwords, I think we'll have less than 13 players on the current roster than Nowak wants back.

Petke has seen his game slip, he's expensive and doesn't play well in a back 3. Hendrickson--has value but we're not going to build a defense around him. Nelsen--he's great but Nowak may feel he isn't worth MLS max, may prefer a taller central back and he probably won't re-sign anyway. Prideaux--he's in the Petke category except he's cheaper. Stokes probably returns b/c he's P-40 and local. The only defender I think who's a lock to return and be protected is Namoff. At goal, only Perkins returns. And even that would be iffy--he's cheap but there are also good bargains to be had at GK and the USA produces plenty of them (Perkins is just one example).

Midfield--assume Stewart is either gone or returns at less money. Carroll, Gros, Kovalenko and Olsen return. Ara returns. At forward, Moreno and Eskandarian return (I'm assuming he loses P-40 status). Who knows about Martin and Quintanilla and Quaranta--we can't cut them if they're hurt but they may or may not be in long range plans.

Plus, this team plays hard and well when we've got all or most of our pieces. But we struggle to win b/c we are missing some key ingredients. Using the Convey allocation now isn't likely to fill enough of those key holes. We could use a finisher, a playmaking midfielder and next year, probably an organizer on the backline.

Bottomline--I'm not writing off this year. But I don't think acquiring one very good player is going to do it for us. We'll still struggle (either b/c Nelsen is off and our defense will be inconsistent or b/c we can't finish). So this team needs to add several players and will likely jetison a bunch to have a cohesive side that compliments what Nowak wants to play. Especially if we're talking (as Payne has hinted at) in saving the allocation until the off-season.

If that's the case, why hang on to all the cap room? I bet NE, Columbus and Colorado would all try to get cap room. I think we've got enough of it to sign 2-3 players at league minimum and still acquire a #1 pick from someone by dealing cap space. That would mean not trying for a stud finisher or skillful A-mid--but again, we may not be using the allocation this season anyway.

Thoughts?

Depends, is there a David Stokes in next year's draft?

I was thinking about this the other day as well when the announcement was made about when the dispersal draft will be held..

I have a different slant on who should and shouldn't be protected:

Players I would leave unprotected:

Stewart - too expensive and too old.. If he does come back, it will be at a much much lower salary, which of course will have to be negotiated before the dispersal draft..

Quintanilla - I just don't think Q2 has the type of game that Nowak is looking for.. he's a solid player with good skills but he is too small and frail for my tastes..

Ara - as of yet, he really hasn't shown too much that would either interest SLC or Chivas, so leaving him exposed isn't a big risk..

Perkins and Rimando - I'd put them both out there.. Rimando because of his big salary, and the fact that he can't even pull down the #1 job right now.. Perkins for pretty much the same reason as Ara..

Cannon - he's on the roster as of today, he won't be for too much longer though, a moot point really

Hendrickson - just because of his age I would leave him unprotected.. Don't think there will be too many takers for him anyway..

Martins - his injury this season has made this choice easy, unfortunately for him.. Also getting on in years (will be 28 at start of next season - not too terribly old, but coming off of serious back to back knee injuries is a no brainer)..

As of right now, those are the players I would leave unprotected..

Though Petke is relatively expensive by MLS defender standards, he still is capable of playing well for this team.. I don't think he does too well as a central defender in the 3-5-2 but has been more than acceptable playing as a marking back in the 3-5-2 and can also play centrally in a 4-4-2 should the need arise.. A gamble for sure, but we can't leave ourselves too exposed with average defenders, especially if Nelsen leaves after this season.. If Nelsen re-signs with MLS, then it's a no brainer to expose Petke and his somewhat hefty salary..

hmm ... selling cap space for draft pics - pretty good idea, but only if you see a bunch of really hot prospects in college or U17 or U19 club tournaments -

but you're right about realistically not finding the one player that can solve our lack or depth in so many places - (see new topic on Biggest Busts) - We have two strong forwards (Esky and Moreno) but thats all - The major Midfielders we have left are really great but again only 4 (Stewart (yes - Ernie!), Olsen, Dema and now Gros), when we need 6 - and solid Central Defenders - right now only Nelsen and he's out - PERIOD

But approaching the Dispersal Draft can be handled by putting out players in pairs - Remember that when one of your players is selected, you get to protect another one of the exposed -

Petke & Hendrickson (especially if Nelsen stays) - Martins & Q1 - Prideaux and Namoff - Carroll & Ara - even Perkins and Rimando

I don't think it matters if there is GREAT talent next year or not. What's generally true is that each year the talent in the MLS draft gets better. Some years it's extraordinary (I put 2003 down as an example of that). I felt 2002 was a mediocre year. But otherwise, there is always some talent there and besides--you can't success in MLS unless you can get good performance from rookies. This year is an abberation for us--who would really expect a 4th round pick to perform like Gros and we were gifted Adu.

I'm not worried about the expansion draft. The more I look at the roster, the more likely I think it is that half of our roster will turnover this winter just b/c Nowak will have had a year to see guys and evaluate them.

Out of our backline, Hendrickson is a useful piece to keep b/c he's a cheap, versatile veteran. But he's nothing to build on. Nelsen is great--but I bet Nowak and Soehm would prefer someone bigger. Plus I don't think we'll keep him anyway. I think Namoff will stay b/c he's American, maybe our fastest backliner, cheap and decent. But I wouldn't be surprised if we exposed our entire backline (except for Namoff) in the expansion draft. And all of our GKs (being that either we'd only lose one OR Nowak might believe we can easily find a good GK for cheap).

First, I'm am increasingly coming to believe that we won't use all of our cap space. Oh--we'll sign some more trialists. They'll likely be A-league refugees or cuts from previous teams. But will we sign $200K worth of trialists? And I don't think we'll use the Convey allocation this season. Nothing set in stone on that--but I'd much rather use it wisely than on a stop-gap answer.

If we're going to turn over 5-8 veteran players this off-season (excluding the P-40's) than Nowak and Co. need the tools to add players. We don't have a lot of picks so adding one more (especially if we're not going to use the cap space anyway) seems like a smart move.

I don't think Nowak dislike Nelly's size unless you've heard something personally from them. When was the last time you saw that man lose a 50/50 challenge? He makes up for any relative lack of height with his drive, intensity, and commitment to winning balls.

...Nelsen is great--but I bet Nowak and Soehm would prefer someone bigger....

I seriously doubt this. Where did you get this? Are you really expecting him back anyway if his contract expires in Dec04?
