View Full Version : Biggest rivalries

Besides the "big 3" (Cubs/Cards, Bo Sox/Yanks, Dodgers/Giants) what are the next biggest rivalries? I've always wondered since no other rivalries get notice besides those. For some reason I think either the Phillies and Braves is a pretty big one now. I'd also have to say Dodgers and Padres even though Dodger fans refuse to acknowledge that there is one because they weren't from New York like the Giants. It's similar to how Yankee fans feel about their rivalry with the Orioles.

What do you mean the Dodgers weren't from New York? Maybe I misread it or something.
Braves/Mets always used to be a big rivalry. Even now for some Mets fans it is. But hard to be a real rivalry when the Braves kick your ass every single time. The Mets/Yankees is always a big one too. It definitely felt good to sweep the Yanks at Shea. Probably the highlight of the past 3 seasons for me as my team continues to free fall into absolute nothing.

Oh, I'm sorry. I meant that the Dodgers don't consider the Padres a rivalry because the Padres didn't move from NY with the Giants and Dodgers. Many Los Angeles fans say "No, the padres arent a rivalry. We feud with the Giants because we are both from NY" which is a weak argument.

Where is the history of Padres/Dodgers? That is what the "we are both from NY" means. Say Bobby Thompson to either a Dodgers or a Giants fan and their is either complete loathing (hate?) or utter love. Do Dodger fans hate, or loath, the Padres because Steve Garvey helped the Padres to the World Series? In 1984.

The old school fans hate each other because the NY history. The new school fans hate each other because of the division rivalry, mainly, but also for the history surrounding it. Most fans I know hate the Dodgers for all of the above, but mainly because LA is such a f'ing craphole, and the LA fans hate us b/c we apparently seem to have a "superior attitude" or whatever. I don't know what they're talking about  ...

Isn't there some geographical rivalry too? I have friends from both Nor and SoCal and they always talk about how their part of Cali is cooler. Plus anytime a fan gets killed by another team's fan, then I would call it a rivalry.

Yea, even with baseball removed, SF and LA citizens have a history of giving each other more than a friendly amount of grief.

No, but the Padres have dominated the Dodgers for the past few seasons and always seem to spoil their chances of getting the wild card in september since the Giants typically win the division. Last year was a prime example. Plus, if I were a Dodger fan I'd hate the Padres fans cause they complain way too much.

I don't know what they're talking about ... To me it seems like they are the ones with a supriority complex. San Diego has practically dominated them the past 10 years and they still feel that they are better because they have been around much longer. In the same time frame the Giants have OWNED the Pads and many of us feel they are a bigger rival than the Dodgers. But of course that is a lop-sided feud because the Giants don't give a rats @$$ about San Diego fans. Although, they still like to make fun of us. I remember last season in our final series against them, they had some guy dress up as the SD chicken and everyone started making fun of him in the crowd as everyone chanted "Padres suck" LOL.

True, we don't care much about the Padres...we've owned them for so long it seems more like a nuisance just having to play them. This season is changing things. though.
It's funny how rivalries can sometimes exist in some people's minds, but not the acual people involved. For example...A's fans HATE the Giants with a real burning passion. But even the most local Oakland native will admit that Giants fans really couldn't care less about the A's. The interleague series are fun, but we don't attempt to smack talk them half as much as they do us. The A's front office even smack talks us ("Four World Championships, No Splash Hits"). It's sorta the same with the Yanks and Mets. Mets fans go out of their way to hate the Yankees. Yankees fans really only care when asked about it.

Outside of the big 3, I'd say Mets-Braves was a good one when Atlanta had John Rocker running his mouth, I don't know how it is now.
Another one that slips under people's radar is White Sox-Twins. These two teams are very competitive with each other, and they've had some brawls here and there. I know the Twins fans hate the White Sox but I don't know how the Sox fans feel about the Twins.

This time of year is perfect for this thread. I think the Padres will make a few enemies this year too ;)

Wow, they have a lot of rivalries then haha. Speaking of the Cards...unfortunately I think they are another team the Padres fans won't llike in the future. Especially Albert Pujols. He's becoming the next Padres killer like Bonds.

I agree. Maybe someday there will be a Padres/Dodgers rivarly, but there hasn't been much competition between these teams.

Pirates-Phillies used to be a good rivalry, but with realignment and the Pirates' fiscal problems that one is finished. A's-Angels could become a rivalry. I'm struggling to find others. One wonders if keeping natural rivals in separate leagues (Astros-Rangers, Cubs-White Sox, Dodgers-Angels) makes sense.

It looked for awhile that Boston-Oakland would be a big rivalry considering what happened last year, but looking at the Coliseum today, Oakland's fans are WEAK.

In what way?? Attendance wise?? There were almost 38,000 people there (which is pretty good considering the size of Oakland), but it looks like alot less because of the vast size of the stadium.
Don't get me wrong, I'm not big on the A's or their fans, but I would never call them "weak". They're a pretty hardcore group.

Ha :)
The A's announcers last night (which, btw, should win the award for biggest homer's EVER), during the trash throwing, said that "this is not A's Brand behavior". Cue massive eye rolling from me and my Giant's supporting roommate.

Is it still a big rivalry? That same week you speak of, was the same week the Yanks played the Bo Sux. I wasn't happy with the Met sweep, but I was a lot more concerned with the series right after that. I think Yankees/Orioles/Oakland, Rangers/Angels/D-Rays are somewhat of a big rivalry. I never like seeing the Yanks lose to one of those teams, especially Oakland and the D-Rays. Arizona could have been a big rivalry with the Yanks, but they rarely play one another.
I wish the Mets would be better. When they were actually winning and Rocker was on the Braves, the rivalry was pretty big. Didn't they throw bottles at him? I remember them throwing batteries at DJ Drew when the Philles and Cards would play.
