Northern Virginia Royals Defender Joins Black-and-Red for Weekend Tilt
WASHINGTON, DC (July 24, 2004) - D.C. United announced today that defender GR Cannon has been added to the roster for Saturday’s match against the Dallas Burn. Cannon joins the Black-and-Red on loan from the Northern Virginia Royals of the USL Pro Soccer League. Kick-off for the game is set for 8:30 p.m. EDT.
“We appreciate the willingness of both GR and the Royals to make this call-up possible in the eleventh hour,” said United Technical Director Dave Kasper.
Cannon finished his college career at Wesley College, where he led the Wolverines to a 12-7 record. His 23 points (eight goals, seven assists) ranked eighth all-time on the single season scoring table for Wesley College and earned the defensive midfielder First Team All-Pennsylvania Athletic Conference honors. He was also named a Third Team All-American, and finished second in voting for the PAC Player of the Year.
In 2004, Cannon has made 16 appearances (15 starts) for the Royals, logging 1,310 minutes. He tallied the game-winning goal in Northern Virginia’s 2-1 defeat of the Chesapeake Dragons on June 30, 2004.

This is sad. Scrambling around for players the day of a game, just to be able to field a team. :(

Hey, if it helps to keep Stoke's ass nailed to the bench, I'm all for it.

I can't believe he played. It just shows how bad the situation was tonight. =P

I am definitely happy that a player like Cannon got a chance to play last night. True, he may not be the best player but we can not make that judgement without giving other young players the opportunity. Hopefully, other players will get a call.

and for those who didn't know, the two teams had a standing relationship for 2003 (I'm not sure about 2004)

This probably mostly involved loaning down players (I know Warren played for them 1 game this year) - I think some others played for NV last year?

I'm all for players getting opportunities, but did Cannon play/practice with DC more than once before the game?

GR's best moment, that Dynamite foul on Pareja in the 2nd half, that earned him a yellow.

I liked the fact that he had an 'edge' to him. Though in a closer game, he might have drawn a couple of cards. :(

Anyone's better than Stokes. OTC is miles better than Stokes, and Cannon (while the foul was pretty blatant) was better than OTC.

I believe we have a perpetual winner in the "Most Obscure Player Ever to Play for DC United" discussion...

That guy basicly costed us the last 2 goals. I am hoping to not see him in a DC United uniform again.
And David Stokes was head and shoulders better than Cannon. I dont think he would make the Richmond Kickers.

I swear Stokes just looks lost out there...maybe he should lay off the Crown-and-Cokes.
