South Africa has decent stadiums thanks to rugby. As for terrorism, I think Morrocco or Egypt would be much worse than SA.

There are more radical fundamentalists and anti-western sentiment in egypt and morroco than South Africa. I lived there for a few years and apart from the crime its not a bad place. They got many large stadiums but they also have 6 years to improve them/build more. Its also the most advanced country in Africa. Go into some of the fancy neighborhoods in SA and you will find that it rivals the poshest neighborhoods anywhere in the world. They have a strong infrastructure and have held other big events before. Most of the time you wouldnt even tell that parts of the country are still third world. Im happy they are hosting WC in 2010 and on a technical level they are the best qualified of any african country.

Congratulations to South Africa. I may be living somewhere in Africa in 2010, so it'll make getting to the games much easier for me. WHoo.

Check out the South Africa 2010 website. By the time the tournament comes around they should have a great set of stadiums. Especially the 92000 capacity (compared to Germany 75000) where the final will be held.

Name one country that isn't. With the resources these terrorist ********wits have they can hit any country if they really wanted to. So do we stop all events in case these ********wits attack or do we get on with our lives?

If the terrorists wanted to attack an event like this it would be very difficult to stop them wherever it is held.

It is obvious you have never been to a major event in South America.

Thank You!!!! Do these people realize that South Africa put on a Rugby AND Cricket World Cup without a hitch? Guess not. Personally, I can't wait.

People forgot that private American security firms in Iraq actually hired South Africans to work in them.

There is no question that South Africa will have great stadiums. They've hosted both the rugby and cricket World Cups and both have apparently gone off without a hitch.
As a fan, though, my main concern is the huge distances between cities, much like at USA 94. The rail system in South Africa is slow and underdeveloped (also like in the USA), which means a huge amount of inconvenience for fans, who will have to move around a lot and fly from one city to the next.
Unlike in Germany, where it will be possible for someone to see 10-11 first round matches without ever taking a train ride of more than 2 hours, in South AFrica a fan may have to take three airplane flights just to see their teams first round games.

the rails are undeveloped because of the crime. Sounds odd but its true. As most people know, rail stations are never in a good area. Crime is the only big problem they face and the most extreme crimes happen regularly in the best neighborhoods, so to convince someone to now go into an even less secure neighborhood is no easy task. To put it short most of the people who can afford to go from world cup game to game will never go near a train station if you paid them. This issue will definately be sorted out in the coming years and with the WC will create many more jobs thus lessening the crime. Just choose one area of the country to watch group games in and only fly for quarters/semis/finals. Johannesburg-Pretoria will be the best, 1hr drive between them, most stadiums and its also the most developed area- not a tourism draw though like the rest of the country.

a world cup should still be held in great britain, they could have england scotland and wales involved. Wales only probably being able to offer the millenium stadium, but scotland has ibrox, hampden park and celtic park. England obviously would have the new wembley, old trafford, st james' park, ashburton grove, anfield, the city stadium and stamford bridge available. The travel for fans would be easy as all the countries are next to each other. Brazil are probably getting wc 2014 and 2018 might be australia, i dont think they should have 2 world cups in a row that are held out of europe.
