The Sounders and Timbers got to play on the real stuff for their July 17 Cascadia Cup thriller:

Chelsea and Celtic will play in Seattle Saturday before around 60,000 fans.
Qwest Field imports a grass pitch, at a cost of around $100,000, for "big" soccer event matches such as these and USA Nat appearances.

Good for the fans... and the players.

Judging from some of his replies on the Sounder messageboard, I'm beginning to believe the only grass in Seattle soccerland is being smoked by Hanauer.

The grass should still be there for the the Sounders July 25 game against Milwaukee.

One of several big battles will come when Seattle finally get an MLS team and the "Gottaplayonplastic Seahawks" block the grass field in this stadium. A BIG reason I voted for the stadium was the promise that this 1st class facility would have a grass field.

I really don't care if the Hawks have a few muddy games in November and December. Getting a little dirty builds character.

My guess is they will claim FieldTurf will be OK for MLS because:
1. FIFA has given it their blessing (if you live in the middle of the desert)
2. the Metro Stars are playing on it (a temporary thorn in their side and another reason to get the heck out of Giants Stadium) and
3. the new Salt Lake team will be playing on it (another tempoary fix until they get their SSS [hurry up Dave!]).

In the mean time I hope Seattle fans are enjoying the beautiful game on the beautiful LIVE green stuff.

From what I could see in the pictures, it doesn't look like any seattle fans were enjoying it.

They must have had a huge riot in a previous game or something. And the league forced them to play in an empty stadium. :)

They only open one side of the mammoth building for A-League games. Attendance that night was announced at 3,500-ish.

Here's the "open side" as it looked for an earlier match this season. This "crowd" was listed as 2,600.
