You are aware that three over-23's may be added to each team for the final tournament? (kinda sucks for the hardworking qualifying players that have to be cut tho) That's where the guessing comes in before the squads have to be announced by tomorrow (Wendesday, July 21).

Pirlo and Girlardino for Italy, mentioned by bluedaddy, are over 23.

Portugal has C. Ronaldo, Tiago (Chealsea's new signing), Viana (Newcastle), and Boa Morte (Fulham) going.

Why isn't Quaresma on this squad?

I think the better question is why is Ronaldo going?

Don't worry I think ManU can survive a couple of games without the lad :)

You are right that they can probably survive, but why was he even picked? He already represented Portugal this summer. Why represent the country in a garbage-ass event like this? Who actually cares about the Olympics anyways? You don't hear commentators say, "there goes gold-medal winner Thierry Henry." However, you do hear them say, "there goes World Cup winner Thierry Henry." Now I know Henry never won the Olympics, but I guess I am saying that the Olympics do not matter. He put his time in with Portugal this summer and he should be allowed to play for Manchester United now.

I agree with most of what you're saying but I also think it can do him a world of good to lead a team that has a great shot at winning this tournament. The biggest danger is that he can come back burnt out after a long Euro 2004, Olympics, and WC qualifiers.

Jurgen Klinsman said his Bronze medal at the Olympics was the medal he held highest regard for, go figure.

I'm sure none of you would knock back a chance to go to the Olympics.

Well you may say that, but then again your country's not there, is it ?

It's always the coward's-castle way to demean something, when one didn't actually qualify for such. That way one can feel mightier than those who did.

FWIW, I HAVE heard words (frequently) to the effect of "this player played with the Olympic Champions", even in the commentary of EPL games.

Just a case of sour grapes, mate. :(

To say that he put in his time for Portugal this summer is complete BS. Representing your country in any tournament should be an honor.

We all know that the Olympics is not as important as the World cup, or European Champ., but it's still important. Ronaldo has the chance to write a page in the Portuguese soccer history, by help leading Portugal to gold. Something Figo, and Eusebio have never done.

I'm pretty sure that if you asked him, who would he rather represent this summer, he would go for his country and not his club.

One final point, Alex Ferguson knew before he signed this kid, that he would lose him to Portugal.

It's not that bad though, he's only gone a few weeks in the beginning of the season. Besides he could've been called up to U-21 Euro Champ., while missing the all important FA Cup but he didn't

Um, I know that. Arguably we should have lost the game to Honduras so we could have avoided Mexico. The 4-0 thrashing is still inexplicable though.
