seems fairly close to the side that won the under 23 euro cup.

Intersting question. If I were Gentile this would be my starting lineup:

----------------------Pelizzoli
Bonera----------Bovo----------Ferrari---------Moretti
---------------------Pirlo(capt.)
-----Del Nero--------De Rossi---------Gasbarroni
--------------Sculli----------Gilardino

Gentile might sacrifice an attacker(Sculli or Del Nero) in order to bring in another worker(Donadel or Palombo). But if he watched Euro 2004 he should realize you need to go all out for the 3 points.

Ghana gave them a scare but thanks to a late equalizer by Gilardino (IMHO should have been included in the Euro 2004 squad instead of the ineffective Vieri), the Italians escape with a 2-2 draw

This is the group of death ... and Ghana are in the handful of candidates for sure.

Ghana's 1st half was impressive ... well organized and talented young team.

Italy demonstrated it's condition of favorite ... they controlled the second half and deservedly tied the game.

IMO ... best match in the tourny so far.

Agreed. It was the most emotive and interesting match to watch so far.

It reminded me of why I liked watching Senegal in WC2002.

This was a really great game. I was fairly upset after the Iraq/Portugal game because of the poor play and I almost decided not to watch any more Olympic games, but with nothing else better to do I decided to watch this one and I had a great time, even though I was pretty neutral. Both teams played hard and physical but clean and played great all-around soccer; and we were treated to some great goals and a fair result (although I think in the end Ghana was pretty lucky to get away with a point). I'm excited to see Italy's next game.

What's wrong with Ghana? Many of their players were on the team which came in 2nd to Argentina in the U-20 World Cup 3 years ago. African teams have won the last two Olympic golds. They are not rank outsiders. BTW, Italy actually DID lose to BELARUS, of all things, to begin the recent European U-21 championship, which they ended up winning. So I'll take the 2-2. At least Italy scored some goals. :)
