The league starts in a few weeks, so I thought I would start getting things going.

1. FC Synot have been renamed to Slovácko and they have been deducted 12pts to start the season because of a financial scandal from last year.

It looks like leading scorer Marek Heinz might stay at Ostrava for another year. He is valued at €2.800.000, and a number of teams are interested in him... Barcelona, Celtic, or Spartak Moscow. Perhaps he wants to see how far he can take Ostrava in the Champions League?

Czech Cup 1st round

Some interesting results as a few lower division teams were able to knock off a couple of second division clubs. The most notable upsets have to be Cesky Brod defeating Bohemians Praha 2-1 and Slavičín beating Kroměříž 3:0. 4th division Horka defeated 3rd division LeRK Prostejov... Horka could be considered my 'second' team. :)

The Czech Gambrinus Liga (first division -- though Gambrinus is a beer, and does not mean "first") kicked off it's 2004/05 campaign this past weekend. Some results:

Zlín 1-0 Slavia
Brno 1-0 Drnovice
Sigma 2-1 Ceske Budéjovice
Sparta 1-1 FC Slovacko (Synot )
Baník 1-2 Teplice
Príbram 2-1 Opava

It's interesting to look at the table and see FC Slovacko at -11pts after only one match. See Canadian Supporters Thread on the bribery scandal.

Thanks for posting the league results.

Good result for Sigma at home going into their UEFA Cup match in Moldova.

Do you know why the name FC Slovacko was picked after the collapse of 1. FC Synot?

I'll try to find some information about the name change on their web-site. It's in Czech, so it may take me a little bit of time to translate. I only have an elementary understanding of the language, as I've lived in the US since I was 7 and my Czech vocabulary isn't very well developed (in addition to reading it being more difficult than conversing in it).

I'll try to get a reply to you in the next day or two.

I can read some Czech. I would say that I am at an elementary (basic) level. Two years ago I knew more, but there are not many Czech people living in my rural area of Canada. I just buy Czech language tapes and work from there. I also try to listen to the Czech radio stations to keep up my vocabulary.

So I gather the theme this season is "Sparta strikes back," perhaps? Is Slavia having money problems? I would have thought they'd have even more need to rebuild since they fell well back last year. But from that UEFA piece it doesn't sound like they will. Maybe the Czech league is getting more competitive instead of being the Sparta-Slavia show?

Oh, and I don't know any Czech but have been to Prague three times and want to go back.

I think this is the season that Sparta strikes back. However, they got off to a slow start at home against Slovacko. I do know that Sparta picked up a number of new players. Ostrava also had a disaster in their first game... losing 2-1 at home to Teplice.

Personally I think this will be the year of Sigma Olomouc! :D Of course I am just a little biased... ;)

The new season should be interesting. Can Ostrava reclaim their title? Will Slovacko overcome their -12 points to start the season? Will Sparta reclaim the title? Or will another team come out surprise everyone (enter Sigma Olomouc)? Will Drnovice reclaim their spot in the 1st division after after two years (they were demoted to the third division in 2001 due to financial problems)? There are so many different story lines to this season...

Do you know why the name FC Slovacko was picked after the collapse of 1. FC Synot?

Interestingly the club's home page still says FC Synot.

Looking through the clubs history, I could make out that there were many teams in the city of Uherském Hradišti -- and that for a long time, 1969-1993 they had a team called TJ Slovacko Slavia Uherském Hradišti (say that 5 times fast). From there it seems (couldn't quite translate the text) the team seemed to be racked with some financial trouble until around 2000, when Synot came to the rescue (hence FC Synot).

I'm guessing that the company Synot is now somewhat trying to distance themselves from the scandal by renaming the team. With the name Slovacko, you get the association of the nostalgic past. And there is also the regional/ethnical association with Slovakia (since Uherském Hradišti is near the Slovakian border).

Of course this is all speculation on bad translation.

Any native Czech or Slovak speakers out there? Perhaps you can help us out: http://www.fc.synot.cz/historie.php

Excellent history of Bohemians Praha can be found here (in English):

Bohemians Praha have a long history in Czech soccer, and it would be great if they could get back to the first division next year.

it would also be nice if they didn't go round changing the dates of their home games at short notice, from for example this Sunday, when I'll be in Prague, to yesterday, when I was here in Warsaw. At least Slavia Prague had the good taste to switch their game from Saturday, when I'll still be here, to Monday, when I'll be in Prague. Hmm, can I combine a trip to Cesky Krumlov with the game at Ceske Budejovice(sp?). Could be worth a go if the bus/train times allow it.

Sorry to hear that you couldn't make it to the game. The Czech FA changes dates on short notice (usually a week or two) for varoius reasons.

Have you been to Cesky Krumlov before? Tons of tourists, but it is a great place to visit.

Who is Ceske Budejovice playing?

just too much travelling and not enough time to make it worthwhile, so I'll just make do with slavia tomorrow (although I'll probably turn up to find they kicked off at 4.30am not pm)

Cesky Krumlov can wait until Tuesday. Slavia's kick off time gives me just enough time to get to Kutna hora and back.

Sparta went up in my estimations today. After being refused entry to their ground last time I was here (not a match day) they let me in for a small charge and even gave me what I think was a free programme. And there was me thinking the club had a heart of stone. Nice ground too. They do have a club badge that looks like it was designed by an 9 year old child in a school competition though.

The Slavia game had better be good. Football has severely let me down on this trip, with Wisla Krakow raising ticket prices by a ridiculous 1000% (100 euros!), Legia Warsaw playing their first leg UEFA Cup tie away rather than at home as published, and Bohemians moving their game with less than a week's notice. To really take the piss Polonia Warsaw rearranged a match against Gdasnk for the 11th - the day before I arrived in Warsaw. I think the region is taking it's revenge on me, for the last time I was in this area, the whole region was flooded under about 10 foot of water a few days after I departed.

Slavia beat Slovan Liberec 1-0 in a rather disjointed game, not helped by what looked a poor crowd in the Strahov, I'd guess about 2500, but it's hard to tell. Slovan's fans swelled the crowd with a total of 31 supporters if I counted correctly (yes, it was that kind of match for a few spells). They pretty much had a policeman each.

Only one goal but Liberec hit the bar twice and Slavia once. After the goal Slavia looked to be doing all they could to set the game up for an agonising last minute equaliser, but oddly it never came. Still, at least I got to see a game which is a result after three blow-outs.

Curiously I ended up sat next to two English people, an irish guy and a scotman. They said that Slavia had a weakened side out, and they spent most of the afternoon teaching those around them some anglo-saxon expletives.

On a side note Cesky Krumlov was very nice, even if getting there did involve a 3 hour ride on what I assumed must have been the Czech Republic's oldest crappiest bus - that was until I saw the bus that took us back to Prague.

Thanks for the report on the Slavia-Liberec match. Crowds in the Czech Republic tend to be an the small side for most games. Although, 2500 is a very low crowd for Slavia.

I feel your pain about riding the oldest crappiest bus in the Czech Republic. I have been on a few of those during my times in the Czech Republic!

A few games were played today in the 3rd round of the Gambrinus Liga:

Ostrava 2 Ceske Budejovice 0
[Zubek 38', Licka 56']

Zlin 0 Blsany 0

Sigma Olomouc 2 Slavia Praha 1 :D
[Reiter 74', 89'; Pitak 8')

Sparta 5 Opava 1
[Pacanda 4', 7', Homola 83', Pacanda 85', Koubsky 88'; Batista 15']

Liberec 2 Pribram 0
[Rychlik 40', Hodur 53']

- Massive win for Sigma at home against rivals Slavia. This win will go a long way in helping Sigma stay in contention for the championship. Interesting to note that Slavia had two players sent off in the match.
- Ostrava gets back on track with a much needed win against Ceske Budejovice.
- Sparta just destroyed Opava.
- Zlin and Blsany played an unispiring match.
- Liberec cruises to an easy win against Pribram.

A few more games are slated for tomorrow and Monday.

2,380 as it turns out, so a damn fine guess if I say so myself. I've seen emptier stadiums though, just over 4000 in the 85,000 capacity Luzhniky stadium for a Torpedo Moscow match.

On the morning or the Slavia game I popped into Bohemian's ground to see if I could purchase a scarf or some similar article. They had to rush off and find someone who spoke English, a person who it dawned on me was one of the players (nice to know over there players are prepared to make a 9am start - players here are only awake at 9am after a late night). Alas no scarf as, unless he was talking crap to get rid of me, things are a bit disorganised with a new boss taking over. Like an idiot, despite being confronted by someone in shorts and boots, I asked the dumb question "so you're a player then?" to which he was able to say "yes, I am him!" and point to his picture on the squad poster on the wall.
If only I could meet some teenage female Bohemians fans, they'd probably be quite impressed that I'd spoken (chatted would be something of an exaggeration) to Tomáš Strnad. At least he didn't feel insulted that I didn't have a clue who he was. Then again I once stood in a pub toilet having a piss next to a Reading player without thinking any more than "that bloke looks a bit like Ricky Newman".

Somehow I don't think that last paragraph really went in the direction this thread was intended.

Man, I am DYING to watch the Czech league! The only chance we can see a Czech club playing(and it's usually limited to Sparta Prague) on TV here in Japan is UEFA Champions League. Since I don't speak Czech at all, I will be holding onto this thread to keep myself updated with what's going on in the Czech league. Thanks much!
