This shows how long we've come since 1990. Mike's a class act, but he wouldn't be able to start on most of the teams in MLS today.

But how many from that 1990 team that went to Italy could?
Nevermind the ones like Harkes, Meola, Doyle and Wynalda (off the top of my head) who already have. They stood out above the likes of the Jimmy Bankses, and so forth.
Even so, great accomplishment for Mike, and it reflects his service to his participation in the sport.

I remember him, but I don't remember a thing about him. How did he make the HoF?

Mike's a real nice guy. I played with him in Ridgewood, Queens at the old Met Oval. Nike turned it into an articficial turf field/complex. Did a good job. If you watched last years Championship Tour it was where some of the Man U guys went to play some ball with local kids.
Funny thing is Mike wasn't even the best guy on our club team (probably 3rd or 4th best), but I give his family a lot of credit. They had a van which they would drive to all of the tryouts/workouts, etc. They put a lot of time in to get him noticed, and back then that was a huge part of making the Nats. Who you knew, and how much time you were willing to spend chasing the dream. I'll never foget watching Italia 90 in shock with him out there at sweeper no less. It was unbelievable. There were alot of proud yet sore guys at the club after that.
Now, at least we have a system where good players do have forums to go to where they compete against the best around the country. Plenty still slip throught the cracks, but it's getting better. Guys like Mike, Desmond (ugh) Armstrong and Bruce (I score a lot in college even though I suck, so you gotta play me) Murray wouldn't stand a chance.
We have come a long way. Still a bit to go, but we are making progress.
