Two days ago, all of a sudden, I began to have repeat problems with pop ups. They are almost always the same ones.

Aside from being extremely annoying, I am worried that it is causing other problems. For example, my Windows Media Player was somehow uninstalled. I sometimes see hyperlinks in text that don't really lead anywhere. And I often have to reboot.

Could this be a virus? What would be the best software to get rid of this? Someone reccomended Ad-aware and Spybot. Can those be downloaded for free on the net? Any other suggestions?

All feedback appreciated. Much thanks.

Spybot S&D will find spyware loaded on your system as well as a few other goodies.

Proxomitron will block pop-ups.

Both are FreeWare. Look for them on the web with your favourite search engine. Also look at this thread, Spyware?!!! (http://www.bigsoccer.com/forum/showthread.php?t=118344).

And Rick's Excellent Freeware Thread (http://www.bigsoccer.com/forum/showthread.php?t=22078&highlight=Rick) which is buried in FFA for some unknown reason.

I would also consider switching to Mozilla FireFox for your web browser. It's fast, secure, and has the best thing since sliced bread: tabbed browsing.

Thanks. A friend of mine just suggested this to me, as well. What is tabbed browsing, BTW?

And thanks to all of you guys for the info.

Some of you guys on these forums are a bit too quick to throw out the porn accusation to just 'know' that's how it happens ;).

Let's not forget about 'freeware' software or 'shareware' software especially the peer 2 peer ones. I remember the first incidences of spyware on the computer for me were because of that. After that the rest of times it was porn.

AdAware is good too. I use that and Spybot just to be safe.

Download and install FireFox here:

http://www.mozilla.org/products/firefox/

Popup Blocking
Stop annoying popup ads in their tracks with Firefox's built in popup blocker.

Tabbed Browsing
View more than one web page in a single window with this time saving feature. Open links in the background so that they're ready for viewing when you're ready to read them.

Smarter Search
Google Search is built right into the toolbar, and there are a plethora of other search tools including Keywords (type "dict <word>" in the Location Bar), and FastFind (start typing the first few letters of some text in the page and Firefox takes you there).

Privacy and Security
Built with your Security in mind, Firefox keeps your computer safe from malicious spyware by not loading harmful ActiveX controls. A comprehensive set of privacy tools keep your online activity your business.
