My intention in starting this thread is to catch up on where things are at with the US playing pool. I see this as an on-going project where we can centralize information about the US pool. Hopefully it makes it a little easier to keep up with the goings-on of the situations of players who Arena is counting on for World Cup Qualification. Here's a very brief summary on where the leading contenders in the pool stands as of today:

Goalkeepers

Brad Friedel: Quiet offseason for Brad. Rock solid #1 for Blackburn Rovers. Played his last game for the US in Plock, Poland, shutting out the Poles and helping the US achieve their 1st win on European soil under Arena.

Kasey Keller: A little trickier for Kasey on the club front. Tottenham's defense has been miserable, and in the offseason, the Spurs did some GK shopping, buying Paul Robinson. Robinson, previously at Leeds, is contending for England's starting job. Also briefly rumoured was a Keller to Portsmouth deal. Keller now finds himself competing to keep his #1 club position. Played both games in the Grenada series. Neck and neck w/ Friedel for US #1.

Tim Howard: Goalkeeper of the year in the Premiership. Incumbent #1 at Manchester United, #3 in US pool, especially after Poland game.

Central Defenders

Eddie Pope: Will play every minute the US needs of him if healthy in WCQ.

Carlos Bocanegra: Chris Coleman, Fulham coach, has gone on record saying that he sees Carlos as a long-term central defender, not the left fullback position he played in last year. His mistake against Poland, compounded by Howard's inability to stop a cross, cost the US. But Carlos still has to be considered a fairly secure option alongside Pope in central defense. May also get platooned at left back.

Pablo Mastroeni: Played by embattled Rapids coach Hankinson as a central defender, Pablo's role with the US is forever in flux. In the post-game interview after Poland, Arena singled out Mastroeni as one player he was happy to see return to a role that Claudio hadn't played in a while - DMid. Mastroeni has found his way onto the US field in every single game since the Haitian debacle. Arena obviously has plans to continue using him going forward.

Corey Gibbs: A revelation for the Burn this year. Arena said he may end up being the US' best defender ever. Gibbs played well in Grenada in his last US appearance. His dominance of Ruud Van Nistelroy might be the best US defensive performance of the year.

Gregg Berhalter: Oft-forgotten, Berhalter played very well in 2 Bundesliga for Cottbus. His face was badly broken by an elbow in a must-win game for promotion, and Cottbus lost. Still in rehab through August, but Berhalter played well against Poland in Plock, and of course was excellent in the World Cup. Will see minutes this cycle.

Tony Sanneh: No contract yet. Rumored to be going to Crew. Had a decent game in last outing for US against Honduras. Likely will only be used if other options aren't available.

Right Backs

Steve Cherundolo: Hannover scene is shaking up with the arrival of a new coach, and Dolo's place as the starting right back, while still his to lose, isn't as secure as it's been in the past. His cross opened up US scoring in Qualification against Grenada, and he looks like the starting right back in most situations.

Frankie Hejduk: Coming off injury, Frankie continues as a right midfielder for the Crew. Played decently in Grenada. One of those guys who shines when the lights are brightest, he will push Dolo hard for the starting right back spot.

Chris Albright: Regular time at right back with the Galaxy is what Albright needs. Leading MLS in assists, his crossing this year has been superb. He readily admits he is still learning the defensive side of his new position.

Left Backs

Greg Vanney: Very unclear what his role will be with club side Bastia when he gets back to France. May not have a role at all with Bastia's new head coach. Played well in 1st match against Grenada. Club situation may determine how much time Vanney gets with US going forward.

Bobby Convey: Tottenham transfer rumors are up again. Convey continues as an automatic starter in Nowak's "all-for-one" DCU midfield. Finishing for club and country has been wretched. When more of an offensive spark is required from US left back, Convey will get the nod.

Holding and/or Defensive Midfielders

Claudio Reyna: After a season of injury at Manchester City, it looks like Claudio has returned to health. He's had a quiet offseason, which is probably a good thing. Claudio will be a likely starter as a holding midfielder for the Blues this season. He's a virtual lock for Arena when healthy - but most often as the attacking midfielder partnered in the middle with a more defensively oriented player behind him.

John O'brien: Another player who struggled with injuries all of last season. O'brien at some point was so frustrated he openly talked about giving up soccer. The big news for JOB was that Ajax picked up his contract for one more season - probably the most important season in his young professional career. If he can't stay healthy, his time in Holland may be done. When he's been healthy at Ajax, he's been a lock to start at left back. Arena has gone on record multiple times, however, saying that he thinks O'brien can most help the USA in the middle of the field. O'brien has been in full training during Ajax's preseason, but missed a recent game as a precautionary measure because of minor injuries. A tenuous situation - at best.

Chris Armas: Missed the Poland game due to swelling in the same knee, I believe, that suffered the ACL tear. Still a virtual lock in Arena's roster when Reyna or O'brien aren't available.

Kerry Zavagnin: Not many people have seen a lot of the KC Wizards this year, but they are probably playing the best soccer in MLS right now. Zavagnin has been the presence in KC's midfield since Preki went down in the preseason. He has been a recent fixture in US camps, and came in to replace Claudio Reyna and kill the game in the 80th minute against Grenada. He played a decent game against Poland, and may be close to surpassing Armas as Arena's preferred MLS holding midfielder.

Richard Mulrooney: Having a down year under first-year head coach Kinnear. San Jose's been shredded by injuries and callups, and Mulrooney has been affected by the revolving door all over the San Jose field. Last game for the US came as a sub after the US had gone down 1-0 to Haiti. Mulrooney, for whatever reasons, has apparently dropped on the depth chart one spot below Zavagnin.

Attacking and/or Wide Midfielders

Landon Donovan: Latest club rumors are that MLS may buy his contract outright from Leverkusen, whatever the costs. Donovan, like Pope, will play every minute the US needs of him as long as he's healthy.

DaMarcus Beasley: Probably the most confusing club situation in the entire US pool. Now looks destined for PSV, who want him to replace Robben. Guus Hiddink loves his speed and thinks he can mold DMB into a world star. PSV wasn't impressed with his game against Poland, but they've seen enough of him to know they're willing to spend what it takes to get him.

Clint Mathis: May take on a withdrawn forward role under new Hannover coach Lienen. Unclear how that might affect his place with the US team, which has always been a tossup between midfield and forward. In his two most recent games, coincidentally both against Poland, Mathis has played midfielder, once partnered with Reyna in central midfield - Reyna as the holding midfielder and Mathis more the attacking midfielder - in the US' victory in Poland, and most recently as a late sub to help the US get a tie in Chicago.

Eddie Lewis: Quiet offseason at 1st division Preston North End for Lewis. Came on as a late sub for Armas against Grenada in Columbus.

Chris Klein: Playing extremely well this season in Kansas City, currently leading the league in assists. In a very honest interview, Klein says that he's on the outside looking in with the US team. "There’s a group of about 10-15 guys who are going to be there all the time, and I understand that I’m not one of those guys." In other words, if the situation is right, Klein may be called in, and he'll have to prove himself in every camp he attends. His last game for the US came in Plock, where he played pretty well.

Eddie Gaven: Having a breakout year with the Metros. In the Poland post-game interviews, Bruce Arena made it very clear that he feels Gaven is one of the players that he thinks can help the US.

Brian Mullan: Recently returned to form after a long recovery from an offseason injury, called in by Arena once Mullan found his stride. Late sub against Poland, had little impact in his first US cap. Like Gaven (and Ching), Arena singled out Mullan as a player he thought would help the US team going forward.

Forwards

Brian McBride: Looks to be set as a 1st choice starter for Fulham as the Premiership gets underway. One of Arena's core group of players who will see a lot of time in WCQ.

Conor Casey: Big offseason news is his transfer to recently promoted-to-Bundesliga Mainz. Injury sustained against Grenada in Columbus looks like it will take a 6-week recovery time, which should give Conor enough time to be ready for the start of Mainz's league debut. Arena has been high on Casey since Conor's performance in Poland.

Josh Wolff: Has maintained health this year, good news for the Wizards and US. When Arena is looking for a fast forward who makes the runs off the ball, Wolff is his first choice.

Jovan Kirovski: Regular starter with the LA Galaxy helping his club to the league's best record. Playing in a withdrawn forward role behind Ruiz with his club, still doesn't have a clear role with the US team. Came on for Casey against Grenada in Columbus, and made one key off-ball run to open up DMB.

Brian Ching: An important year for Ching. Along with Davy Arnaud, he's the top American goalscorer this season in MLS. Subbed in for McBride in his first cap in over a year with the US and only his 2nd cap ever, Ching played well enough to be a contender for a roster spot in WCQ matches.

Taylor Twellman: Just getting back from injury, TnT played well against the Fire en route to his 2nd and 3rd goals of this MLS season. Partnered with Casey as a late game sub against Mexico, and was a key impact player in helping the US get the game-winning goal.

If anyone else has any news - not rumors or speculation running wild on Big Soccer - regarding these players, please feel free to post it here on these threads. As I see articles and discussion around, I'll try to provide links to those within this thread as well.

((If someone can tell me how the ******** to paste cells from an Excel sheet into this bubble-gum and duct tape interface so that they look right, I'll gladly forward some rep.))

These are the minutes played by each player in the pool for 2003 and 2004 through the Poland match. The predictions are subjective.

I think there are 17 players who are probably in if healthy. Which leaves only three field spots available. Those spots will probably be filled from the pool of players at the bottom of the list. If one of the top 17 gets injured that's an extra spot. If guys like Buddle or Johnson really break out in the next year, that's one less spot available for the "maybe" bunch.

But we can already see pretty much what the squad will look like for Germany.

Thanks, Nutmeg. Both this post and the thread idea are excellent. As someone who doesn't follow the world of soccer terribly closely outside of the USMNT, this is extremely useful.

My only suggestion would be putting Sanneh under the right back category. Otherwise, very nice job.

I don't get why Klein is on the outs. He's not a starter, but he could certainly come in and add pep in the attack. Sort of in the Eddie Lewis mold except on the right--he belongs in the 18, in my opinion.

Right back: I don't think Sanneh is enough in-form to go 90 in Kingston in August. That pretty much has to be Dolo, even though it gives up some size. That's why Bruce wants Albright to hurry along his progress at right back. Size, speed, stamina, crossing. Frankie is the wild card (literally). I see him at #2 behind Dolo, for the moment. I think he's better in some regards, more tenacious in the tackle and faster, but also more likely to lose his head and get a red or give up a PK.

JOB: I think Bruce has fallen in love with the box midfield, especially on the road when the other team is forced to attack. This marginalizes JOB in a sense because Bruce wants a true destroyer next to Reyna in the midfield. Also, Bruce admitted to erring last time in Mazatenango by putting too many out-of-season Euro players on the field. Won't happen this time (we hope).

Keeper: I think Bruce starts Keller. Just a feeling. To keep the chemistry of failing to name a true #1 in check. Also, Keller is reputed to be better on crosses, yes? He'll be getting plenty of those.

Kirovski: I really, really, really hope he stays home. He doesn't have size, he doesn't have speed, he's not a great passer or holder of the ball, not a great free kick taker. I just don't understand how he could even get a sniff of the national team and never will. Give me Davy Arnaud, Brian Ching, John Wolyniec and quite a few others over Kirovski any day.

Armas played Wednesday night for the Fire and appeared to be fine, though he was subbed out in the 2nd half and iced up, presumably as a precautionary measure.

The Fire doesn't think this is anything to worry about but aren't 100% sure.

I'd include Eddie Johnson in the forward pool (Arena said he would've been called in for the home Poland game but was injured). Otherwise, looks good, at least viewing it as what we think Bruce will do, rather than what we might do.

Only other thing is it could be helpful to list players who play more than one position, in all their positions:

Right backs: Sanneh, Mastroeni, Mulrooney
Left backs: Hejduk, Gibbs, Bocanegra, Lewis
Defensive mids: Mastroeni
Forwards: Donovan, Mathis

Am I the only one that would REALLY like to see Klein get a look at right back?

Amen, except the part about Woly. I'm a Metro supporter, and I like the guys grit, but he isn't Nats material.

I would say there is an extremely strong probability that the players called into the next round of World Cup Qualifying will come from the pool of players who have been capped in the last year. So if you combine the two lists (players in the 1st post and the players who've been capped this year), this is Bruce Arena's playing pool by position for the upcoming Jamaica qualifier. Players in red are currently unavailable due to injury. If the qualifier against Jamaica were to be played today, however, Bruce would have an unusual amount of players to draw from.

Goalkeepers:
Brad Friedel
Kasey Keller

Johnny Walker
Kevin Hartman

Does anyone think that Clint Dempsey may make it into a camp or two before Germany? I have been impressed with his play for the REVS.

The Fire doesn't think this is anything to worry about but aren't 100% sure.

I thought he played erratically -- some very good stuff, yet not covering as much ground as he usually does. The word I would use is "constrained."

I am going to the game Saturday, so it will be interesting to see how he does.

Does anyone think that Clint Dempsey may make it into a camp or two before Germany? I have been impressed with his play for the REVS.

Let's see how things shake out for Clint the rest of the year. I am working form memory here, but I don't think Bruce has ever called in an MLS rookie...it seems to me he always wants to see 20 or so 1st division games under your belt before he starts looking seriously.

That being said, on Wednesday, Clint was very dynamic against the Fire. He's what one coach I know calls a "trouble maker" player. That is, he may lay quiet in the reeds, but two or three times a game he always causes lots and lots of trouble for the opposition. He seems to have the knack for doing that.

Wow isn't it great to talk of the US National Team with such great hope for this next round of WCQ's.

GK's- I am partial to Tim Howard (Metrofan), but Friedel is our keeper in the three man pool for now. Those penalty saves in the last WC and his ability to keep our back line in shape seperate him form Howard and Keller respectively. Something about Keller I never really liked him much, although he is a good keeper.

Defenders-Where do I begin? How about Eddie Pope he will be the key for our backline all the way through Germany 06'. Paired with Pope I have Gibbs he really impressed me in the match Holland, I hope to see more of him. On the wings Boca at LB subbing in CB when applicable and for RB I have to believe in Hejduk when he returns, not the best defender but he leaves it all on the field.

Defenders Subs- LB Convey I dont see him in our midfield ever so he will have to get that transfer to raise his skill level. LB Vanney I dont like the hair, but he is a solid defender when in the game. RB Cherundolo I never know when this guy is on the field, but that seems like a good attribute for a RB. Finally we have got to have better options than Chris Albright he will not cut it at the National level.

Midfielders- Holding Mids- I can't wait for JOB to get back into Nat unidorm and bring some life into our d mid position. I just recently viewed my tapes of the US v. Poland and Us v. South Korea in WC 02 and his play in the midfield was simply awesome. Reyna is our next best holding mid he is better than JOB at controlling the game plain and simple. This is his best attribute to the USNATS. Right now he is our only player to fill that roll. Armas is our other option at starting dmid he is a solid player but very limited going up field and linking with other players. Yet, he is a solid defender and this bodes well for him and our National team.

Holding Mids Subs-Mastroeni has lost his place in our midfield, watching him in the WC I thought he was a sure fit as a true dmid, but he has fallen off of his form since then. Zavagnin does nothing for me I would rather see Rico Clark in there but thats not going to happen for at least an other year.

Attacking Mid- LD is simply too good a passer to be stuck on top he is alock at RM and there is nothing to say except he needs work on his game out wide. He has shown he can play up the middle, but we need some attack from the wings. DMB has shown a lot over the past three years and his growtht as a left winger adds a dynamic to our team that can not be replaced by anyone. His speed is unmatched by anyone on our team. Occasionally I would like to see Clint as an attacking mid, but it has to be the right situation. He is to dangerous up top. That finish aginst South Korea gives me goosebumps every time I watch it.

Atttacking Mid Subs- All I can say is that Eddie Gaven will be a star for this national team. BA has got to keep him coming into camp this kid not only deserves it, he will earn it right before our eyes over the next two years. Barring injury it does not matter who is our subs because LD and DMB are our Amids for the next six to ten years.

Forwards- My gut feeling is that Mc head as some say has passed his prime. Yet, his ability to fearlessly win head ball after head ball reminds me that he is an asset. Wolff is a good option to pair up top, but he works better with Clint. Wolff and Mathis work best when paired together and neither of them work well with Mcbride, But these are our best three options I believe. I love the way Clint plays and his passion on the field, and I think he should start every game, but his lack of conditioning is almost always evident. He does not have the conditioning to play an effective mid field role for ninety minutes that is why he should be played up top.

Forward subs- Who is Conor Casey and when can I see more of him? I liked the small portion I have seen of him, but is he capable of replacing McBride. Another option I like is Twellman he has been slow to appease on the National level, but i feel he has a lot to offer.

This set of players is our best options going into the seconf round WCQ's, but over the next two summers a lot can change. We will see the next emergence of LD and DMB from our pool od American players. One can only hope that they will be at forward and RB. It will be an exciting two years for the US Nats and I am so interested to follow along.
P.S. Every one say nightly prayers for the health of JOB he is our link between great defense and offensive opportunity.

On the keeper issue:

I think Friedel is indisputably the #1. However, I think Howard should be #2. IMO, Keller was resoundingly average all season long. The evidence of an entire season is more probative than that of a single friendly, especially when there wasn't much to do.

Tottenham's defense was poor as a unit, but a great deal of it had to do with Keller's poor play. He was aggressive when he should have sat back, and sat back when he should have claimed balls. There were too many balls that slid under him, etc. I think he's fallen to #3. Does anyone really think that Tottenham wouldn't swap him with Man Utd... even for just a year (so as to take the ages out of the equation)?

I had to check the World Cup Qualifying Schedule.

If any player is going to break through this list of about 40 candidates for the upcoming round of WCQ, they'll have to do it between now and November 17th. So neither one has much time to make a serious impression.

I assume you are speaking of Robbie Russell, recently signed by RBK Rosenborg. That's an impressive club to get a contract with. I just really don't know much about them other than what I've seen of them in the Champions League. I also know nothing about Russell's status with the team, but my assumption on a team the size of Rosenborg is that Russell must have some fierce competition for playing time. What I do know is that he's a right back whose been called into one camp, but IIRC got injured. He's looking up the ladder, and I just can't see Bruce Arena calling him from his new club just to ride the pine behind Dolo and Hejduk. If he does get a call, it will be because (a) the US has already secured their advancement or (b) he has become so good that Arena thinks he should start over every other right back.

Oguchi Onyewu is in a similar situation, just having signed at Standard Liege. There's a club I know nothing about, period. So others will have to give us the scoop on what's going on there. I understand he's playing (http://www.bigsoccer.com/forum/showthread.php?p=2787877&highlight=%2AOnyewu%2A#post2787877), though. But he's looking up a taller ladder at central defender than Russell is at right back.

I'd be really, really surprised to see either get looks before November 17th, but pleasantly so. It'd mean that both are pretty good players that can help the US, or it'd mean the US has secured advancement and Bruce is looking deeper into the pool. Either way, good news.

More excellent work, Nutmeg, thanks.

In your combined player pool list, you have Vanney listed in red? Didn't know he was injured. Mistake?

The outside backs really worry me. Our weakest positions on the field, imo. Only having Vanney and Convey on the left... not enough, methinks. I would rather see Boca out there and Pope and Gibbs in the center. The Cherundolo/Hejduk tandem on the right doesn't do much for me, either.

In fact, our best right back last WC was Sanneh... I hope someone steps up like he did last time around. Not counting on him two years from now.

I think he'll be a factor at some point, yes. I also think a few other young MLS players (Gros, Grabavoy, Noonan, Buddle, EJ) may get some looks by then, but this really isn't the thread for speculation about who might make it. It looks to me like the purpose for this thread was to evaluate guys who have already seen time with the nats.

Great info.

Lots of positives to go around, starting from the back we look really solid. Our goalies are excellent.

In back, we're solid, especially in the middle where Boca is a Premiership starter and Pope although a MLS guy is even stronger.

In midfield, if we ever get O'Brien back, we're very strong again with him and Reyna, defensive guys like Armas and attackers like Donovan and Beasley.

But, here comes the bad news...

Up front is where the problems lie. McBride is solid but may start falling off by 2006. Casey looks like he'll be ready to take his place if necessary, and Ching actually showed fairly well against Poland, so a big forward may not be too much of a problem, even though it is unlikely to be a real strength of the team.

The second forward is the big mystery. Wolff has been up and down of late. Donovan seems to be settling in midfield. Ever since he sat out injured, Mathis has been less explosive and seems to be falling into midfield as well. None of the young guns have really stepped up here yet. Twellman is struggling in MLS. Kiro's not the answer. I seriously doubt Freddy will be ready. Razov wasn't the answer in 2002, and is much more likely to be a lesser player in 2006, not a better one. Johnson is a possibility, but he needs to hurry. Anybody...anybody...

We'll dominate most teams in CONCACAF. But, against stronger competition, I see us struggling to score.

Then again, I tend to be a glass half empty kinda guy.

Lets hope we get some firepower shooting up out of nowhere.

I'd like to reiterate that the way Nutmeg has set this up, the pool refers to the "next round of World Cup qualifying" (post #8 above). If the players have not been in camp yet, it is extremely unlikely that they will be able to force themselves onto the squad for the next round. However, that says nothing about the later stages of Qualifying. The players constantly show their abilities as they play club matches and Bruce Arena watches. If someone shows better than those currently on Nutmeg's list, well, that person can expect a future invitation to camp. But almost certainly not now. Now is the time to stabilize the squad for the next round.

The US will be fine up top. What you will see in the future is the US going away from the traditional target/holding forward. Players like Johnson, Ching, Buddle, Casey, and even a guy like Jaqua are more dynamic forwards who while being large are fast and are more adept at running at a defense. The only player who resembles McBride out of this group is Ching, but he is less one dimensional.
