After hearing that SLC get a team, an idea popped up in my head how they could start their reserve team. BYU play in PDL and Blitzz are going to be heading to the A-league. MLS plans on adding reserve teams anyway. so why doesn't the expansion team try to work something out with byu. the players that cant make the jump, could be offered scholarships and the players from the reserve that can make the jump MLS, but doesn't have a chance to play could be loaned to blitzz. what do you guys think? SLC have something working for them with blitzz and byu.

This is a great idea. It would help BYU and Blitzz supporters tranisition to MLS supporters.

The BYU team is not just sponsored by the school like UNAM. The players are students and maintain amateur status.
The reserve teams probably won't be PDL teams because of this.
Not to mention the BYU honor code issues.

how can the players lose their amateur status when the club offers them a scholarship?? where i live in germany younger players that are good, doesn't matter which league(almost doesn't matter), get amtateur contracts and get paid up to 7,000 euros a month. i know some players from my area that have done this. plus a guy from my old class brother plays for the amateur team and has an amateur contract.

The Honor Code would stop any such idea at BYU, trust me. But IF the Blitzz went down a level to PDL or stayed put I think it is a decent idea for them, but I doubt Garff will back it.

Someone point out to me why the Honor Code would inately be a problem for this...?
Nevertheless, I don't think it will work for the amteur status. The moment a player got called up, he'd loose amateur status and could no longer play for BYU's team (something I wouldn't be happy about...). Not to mention I don't see Chris Watkins jumping at the idea of having any sort of outside force influencing his team.

How is it in the rest of the world? The Blitzz going A-league could make the MLS team better if they worked together. MLS reserves and players coming off injury or on the bench could play with the A-league Blitzz and then come in ready to go with the MLS team.
I hope someone figures this out and gets rid of the egos and politics. They need to work together to make soccer better.
Blitzz and MLS team need to work together.

I agree that the Blitzz and MLS should work together. There are already established examples of reserve teams, even if it's not exactly like Europe. The Chicago Fire have a reserve team in the PDL, the Rapids also have a team, and the LA Galaxy have a relationship with the Orange County Blue Star. All three of those "reserve" teams play in the PDL. I don't think the A-League is really about developing players for MLS, they are there to be stand-alone professional organizations, some even building their own youth systems.
I think it makes the most sense for the Blitzz to play at the PDL level. They would basically be playing against the teams they already play against now, both PDL and PSL. As an A-League team, who would your fan base be? Most of those currently going to Blitzz games are all going to be MLS fans, many buying season tickets. Are we going to expect them to also buy Blitzz season tickets? If I'm living in Salt Lake City I can't see myself buying both. I would support MLS all the way, and maybe go to the occasional Blitzz game to see the reserves. And if the Blitzz go A-League, their travel costs are going to go way up as well. If there's no MLS, you could justify asking your fans to pay a few bucks more per ticket to see the higher level of play than the current PSL, but with MLS there the fans are going to pay to see them rather than the A-League.
Let the Blitzz play in the PDL. It will be less expensive for the organization and they will still be playing teams they already know like BYU and the San Diego Gauchos and the beloved Fresno Fuego. Fans in Salt Lake can be expected to go see a few Blitzz games a year while still supporting MLS. But I doubt you'll get a lot of people willing to get season tickets for both an MLS team and an A-League team.

I think their reserve teams should play amongst themselves. I do not like the Fire reserves playing in cups like the open cup as what happens if the Fire and Fires reserves are in the final? It would be a joke! So the 12 MLS sides should have their 12 senior sides in the MLS and Open cup, their reserve teams in a respective reserve MLS comp and they are not allowed to play in comps like open cup etc but they can be called up by the senior team to play in the open cup.
so it should go like this:
MLS - 12 senior sides
MLS RESERVES - 12 Reserve sides
OPEN CUP - 12 Senior MLS teams ONLY, players from the reserves can be called up to play for the senior side. :)

in holland and germany, plus some other countries, the reserve teams play in the cups, but in germany when the first team meets the second team then the first team comes farther. this happend last season in the german cup, i think it was with wolfsburg.
i think its good though when the reserve teams can play in the open cup because they could get more experience. the reserve teams should qualify though just like the rest of the usl teams.

I understand that but it would be a farce if the reserve side played the senior side in the cup.
I say it should be like the English FA have it
a tiered structure of Senior-Reserve-Under 19 sides. where only the senior side play in the cup.
