I like these:
- SLC Olympic/Salt Lake Olympic - traditional style name, simple and to the point. SLC had the Winter Olympics there, probably the crowning achievement of the town thus far, and it's got a nice ring to it. Why not?
- SLC/Salt Lake Wanderers/Rovers/Rangers - again, very traditional yet still won't seem too "out there" for soccer virgins (who cares about them anyway?!). Also, given the area's legacy of exploration (ie, wandering, roving, ha ha) it seems appropriate.
- Salt Lake/SLC, plain and simple. Add on FC, SC, AC, to the beginning or end, however you please. Hell, tag on United. I don't mind having multiple Uniteds as everywhere else.
Either way, leave the word "City" out of it...just doesn't sound as good. And screw "Utah" as well. But seriously, all the fluffy garbage a la Wizards and Earthquakes and the whole "<location> <pluralized noun>" format need to be tossed. It'll be hard to gain any international credibility with a name like "The Salt Lake City Wildcats" or "The Utah Super Toughguys", and names like that are becoming easily forgettable to the average American bombarded with stupid names like these in every club sport he's exposed to. And under no circumstances should any club anywhere ever have a names like they use in WNBA or WUSA. I just think a classy, not-too-flashy, simple name would go over pretty well. Let the nickname just originate naturally so nobody is forced to cringe every time they refer to a horribly contrived and cartoonish nickname for their team like "the Wizards".

The "San Jose Earthquakes" and "Kansas City Wizards" names absolutely rule! http://www.bigsoccer.com/forum/images/icons/icon14.gif

I agree it needs to be a classy traditional American name, like San Jose Earthquakes and Kansas City Wizards.
My favorite so far is Salt Lake City Seagulls.
Be a good way to send a message to the Eurosnobs that this is an American league.

The Olympics happen once every 4 years (per season) and they are not going to be in SLC again. Why name a team after a sporting event from 2 years ago? The team needs to be somthing that represents the city going forward, not an event from a couple years ago. This is not a good team name.

I can think of two other teams right off the top of my head that have Olympic in the team name. It's not so bad.

so location/plural noun is only ok if the noun is eurosnobbish enough?

i saw the salt lake city saints on the other thread. i dont know if the mormon religion has much of a connection to sainthood etc. but the sound salt lake saints goes together well and is not a gay or stupid name name.

The real name of the Mormon church is the Latter Day Saints, so Saints is out on religious grounds.
Though I do like it.

Dave Checketts was on local radio yesterday, and he said the new name would have a European flair to it.. so expect SLC FC or something like that.. I like Inter SLC...

Checketts said flat out that the name would NOT be Saints. And that it would not be Utah.

What is the reason behind not calling them "Utah" ? Dont they wanna draw fans from the whole state ?

Because naming teams after states bigger than Rhode Island is stupid. Name them after the city (or small region) they play in/near. Utah is way too big, what happens if a second team shows up?
For example, having the Florida Marlins and Tampa Bay Devil Rays (or Panthers and Lightening) isn't good.
You can still go to games if you're not from SLC. They'll still take your money.

That's ridiculous. Yes, I hear fans of the Devil Rays bemoan the fact that another team has the audacity to call themselves Florida every day....of course.....its an insult!! A second team in Utah??? Where??? Brillant argument.
