Vaduz plays in the Swiss League, but competes annually in the Liechtenstein Cup (and usually wins). They compete against the other Liechtensteiner teams.

I assume that the other teams from Liechtenstein play in the lower levels of Swiss soccer?

If it is true, does that mean that Monaco can enter europe each year?

Monaco has no FA at all, meaning AS Monaco is fully integrated into the French league system. I believe there might be an amateur Monaco league/cup, but that organization is not a member of Uefa.

FC Vaduz's participation in the Swiss league has some restrictions however. Vaduz can never "take away" a european spot from a Swiss team, meaning that if Vaduz somehow manages to win the Super League one day - they won't be allowed to participate in CL qualifying...

PS: Welcome to Bigsoccer, how come you know so much about Swiss football?

FC Vaduz won a European tie for the first time at their eleventh attempt as victory tonight at Longford Town FC built on their 1-0 lead from the first leg to see the team from Liechtenstein through to the UEFA Cup second qualifying round.
This is the first time Vaduz "won" a European tie, but they have advanced before:

Three years later, Vaduz won through a first round Cup Winners' Cup tie against Latvia's FK Universitate Riga, winning 4-2 on penalties after 1-1 draws in both legs. That earned them a second-round meeting with Paris Saint-Germain FC which the French side won 7-0 on aggregate.

Yes, that would be correct.

Beveren - Vaduz (12/08)
Vaduz - Beveren (26/08)

Beveren tied Club Brugge in the first match of the season but has severe roster size problems before the Vaduz tie. As of right now Beveren only has 13 players available, missing are team stars Sanogo and Kaïper Kipre. I sense opportunity for Vaduz who has looked good in the Challenge League and has a maximum six points after two rounds.

The match will be at the Freethiel stadium in Beveren (13,290):

Final score: 3-1. Vaduz needs at least two goals at home.

Looks like Vaduz were shown their limits today. What I find really interesting is that Beveren fielded a team with eleven (!) players from the Ivory coast - not one single Belgian player. FCV basically played an Ivory Coast selection...

Look at their roster: http://www.uefa.com/Competitions/UEFACup/Clubs/Club=52764/index.html

I count 13 Ivory Coast players!

That is amazing! 13 Players from Cote D'Ivoire! I guess this match was essentially two national teams playing each other.

Monaco actually has its own amateur league, believe it or not. There is cup as well. Interesting, but surely Vaduz must be able to enter the champions league - even if there is no national championship. Should Swansea reach the premiership in england and win it, this rule wouldn't apply. Although Swansea play in the English league, they enter the welsh premier cup. Until about 1990, they played in the proper Welsh Cup. they usually won it and played in europe whilst playing in the english third division. I'm not sure about the Welsh/English Fa and who decides actions against this club - but i assume they belong to the welsh fa. The only way for Swansea to get into the CL would be able to win welsh league - which is s**t.

These same principles are being looked at by celtic and rangers who want to play in england.

I understand they have no right to deprive a Swiss team of cl places, but surely they are members of the swiss league (despite being located in a prinicipality.)

Sorry to harp on about Swansea, but I used my local insight to gauge my own opinon....

BTW= I know alot about swiss football - I have a soft spot for FCB (after going on a trip in school to Basle and the swiss/german/french alps.)

Sorry about my delayed response.... :)

The key question is whether Swansea is a Welsh FA member or not (and even if they are - they might be a very special exception.) As for Liechtenstein, I'm absolutely certain that there is no way for Vaduz to enter the Champions League, simply because Uefa does not allocate the Liechtenstein FA a CL spot. The LIE teams might play in the Swiss league system but they have a "guest status". In fact, when Vaduz came close to promotion for the first time two years ago the Swiss clubs had to give their blessings at a league meeting first before Vaduz could even think about going up..

If I remember correctly, we had this discussion when the Alpine League was proposed and near the end of last season as Vaduz was fighting for promotion.

As I understand it, Wrexham, Swanesa and Cardiff City have given up their right to take CL or UEFA Cup spot from the Welsh FA. The only way they could qualify for either of these tournaments is if they made it to the Premiership and played their way in.
Monaco is the same thing.
Vaduz is different because they are not part of the SFA. Because they still fight for their FA's cup each season, they can not earn a CL or UEFA Cup spot from Switzerland.

in the grand scheme of things, it doesn't really matter
Vaduz could make it to the Swiss Division One, but they'd still have to WIN the league for this question to be of any significance
