Surprise, surprise.

Jamaica shake things up just before the next round of qualifying by hiring Brazilian coach Sebastiao Lazaroni. According to the article he has been hired to "work with the national football programme". But it is generally understood that the role of current coach Carl Brown will be seriously marginalized by this move. Lazaroni, who already had a short stint with Jamaica in 2000, is best known as the coach of the Brazilian national team during the 1990 World Cup.

Déjà vu for Brown? Brazilian Lazaroni to take charge (http://www.jamaica-gleaner.com/gleaner/20040712/sports/sports1.html)

What? Why? Jamaica has been getting its best results in years lately. This makes no sense.

Lazaroni, who already had a short stint with Jamaica in 2000, is best known as the coach of the Brazilian national team during the 1990 World Cup.

And IIRC, Lazaroni was widely criticized in Brazilian circles for having his team in 1990 for playing too defensively, and not making the most of its innate flair and style for the game in its play.

I'm sure he's had a lot to learn since then, and probably has, but there's got to be hope for us as American fans to see someone who can potentially restrain a free-flowing opposition team from playing like it can by virtue of a coach's own tactics.

This now means trouble in both the Jamaican and Costa Rican camps just prior to qualifiers next month.

Jamaica should still be able to get to the Hex, but the CR side we're seeing in the Copa America looks demoralized and vulnerable to the group of death come August.

In the very short time frame before our game on Aug 18, there is NO way that Jamaica will be able to absorb anything from Lazaroni.
According to their official supporter's club site, the Reggae Boyz will play no matches of any kind before they meet us.
I like this development, because the timing really sucks for Jamaica. Most of our guys will be in mid-season form (a bit more tired, perhaps), and Jamaica will probably (if they're lucky) get 2 weeks with Lazaroni to implement what he's going to change up.

The above link also states that Lazaroni will be named 'Head Coach of the Senior National Team', and that Brown will be a member of his staff.
