How is Salt Lake City any better than Rochester???

They don't have a SSS under construction ready to open the next season. Won't it look better to open the MSL franchise in Rochester in 2006? MLS thinks so. Rochester will get their team then. SLC = a few years at most in a 40+k seat stadium then a SSS. Rochester would = 1 year in a minor league baseball stadium (correct?) then a move. Why not wait for a nice opening in a SSS in 06 (07 at the latest). The other factor, ownership in SLC clearly has put forward the $$$. Rochester seems to have some question regarding how deep the pockets of ownership will be (sustain losses for at least 5-10 years if not longer).

Hate to be pesimist, but since when Salt Lake City is a soccer city?. I would hate to see 5,000 per game at the very most. I'm not sure in MLS made the right choice by bringing a team to Salt Lake Utah.

It's pretty absurd to be afraid of seeing 5000 a game for a Salt Lake MLS team when the Utah Blitzz of SLC got 5245 their last game. That's the Blitzz that don't even play in the A-league, and were playing a bunch of amateurs. So, uh, you may not be sure, but you apparently don't know a whole lot about the situation either.

just as chris said. the blitz who are not even in the A league are averaging more than 5k per game. not to mention that the blitz youth league has over 16k kids playing in it. salt lake and utah are a soccer place. you are just ignorant and upset that salt lake is getting a team finally and someone else is not.

But will they sell beer at the game? Budweiser is not paying MLS $ for beer not to be sold at games.... And how can a MLS supporters club properly function without beer ???

I've been to Salt Lake City and it's probably the least racist city in a rather racist state, fwiw.

the only problem with this state is the complete LACK of seperation between church and state. if there really was a seperation than this city and state would be completely normal. i dont want to sound prejudace(sp?), but its so true. the lds faith has their hands stuck in everything related to the state, politics, daily life, etc. and its giving us the worst reputation ever.

I agree to an extent. I am LDS and even I realize how we taint the government sometimes. (For instance, almost all July 4th celebrations occured on the 3rd or 5th, because most towns didn't want to celebrate it on Sunday - many were outraged, rightfully so. However, governments are made to function for the majority of the people. Since the majority of the people in Utah voted for representatives that would rather it be celebrated on a day other then Sunday, that's what happened.) I'll note that I grew up outside of Utah, and I am here solely for college. I realize there is a lot wrong with it, but the low crime rate, low cost of living, etc. are all things to be admired.

However, there isn't much we can do aside from being actively involved in politics and attempting to put into office people who will try and represent both the state and national constitution how you feel it is interpreted. (Interesting you use "seperation of church and state." Look up the origin of those words, when they were first used by a public figure, and see what the context is. Little homework for you.)

And Senator Orrin Hatch is an idiot.

EDIT: I changed "Hatch is a moron" to "Hatch is an idiot" for the obvious reason some might read that he is a "mormon"... which is also true.

At least that was the beer of choice when I lived there. I was weaned on the stuff. Folks that think people don't drink in SLC and environs just haven't been there. It's a great town, with great people, incredible weather and unbelievable skiing.

I'm gonna be torn apart watching televised games and remembering those magical Utah summer evenings. But since I've accumulated a lot of frequent flyer miles I'm looking forward to excuses for road trips when United and Utah's new team play. Just too bad that my wife won't leave the East. Otherwise I'm home.

Not if they play at Univ. of Utah Stadium. The Crew didn't have beer when they played at OSU.

The only way to get booze into the stadium was to swallow it before the games.

maybe its because african americans just choose not to live here. why does everyone think everybody in utah is racist.

First let me say I'm glad SLC is getting a team and it will be one I have a casual rooting interest in. My wife is a Mormon and I have attended the church officially as an investigator for about the last 5 years. I think as a whole Mormons are great people.

But to the point quoted above. Regardless of how hard the LDS tries to put a bow tie on this particular pig you know damn well why people consider Mormons racist towards blacks. At least you should if you know your church history.

But to defend your point, I don't think the black population is very high anywhere in the Midwest, so I doubt that blacks being discriminated against is really the root cause of the statistic.
